Position Overview

AECOM is seeking a Solar Engineer to join the Renewables and Microgrid Team within our Energy Practice Engineering Center of Excellence. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely or from various Energy offices across the United States.

Our team specializes in a comprehensive range of electrical engineering services across various sectors, including transmission (substations, overhead and underground systems, generator interconnections), renewable generation (Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Wind), and power distribution (overhead and underground systems, EV charging networks, microgrid design). We are looking for a seasoned engineering professional with a background in solar PV design and power engineering to enhance our client outreach and sustain our existing relationships. Ideal candidates will possess a robust background in solar engineering and experience leading project tasks.

The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and capable of making independent decisions under the mentorship of senior staff. Experience in the power industry, particularly in solar engineering and design, as well as interconnection and distribution systems, is essential. Familiarity with battery energy storage and wind power is advantageous. This role presents an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a solid technical foundation seeking to advance into project leadership.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee solar PV electrical engineering design for assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with Project Engineers and Managers to develop design schedules and budgets.
  • Support business development initiatives related to renewable energy projects.
  • Monitor project progress to ensure quality, timely, and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Design solar PV systems, including array layouts, DC string sizing, and utility interconnections for various mounting systems.
  • Conduct solar PV system energy production modeling.
  • Develop specifications for solar construction and equipment.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to system voltage, conductor sizing, and utility disconnect requirements.
  • Assist in producing drawings, including one-line and three-line diagrams.
  • Prepare Bill of Materials and conduct cost estimation and payback evaluations for PV systems.
  • Design DC and low to medium voltage power distribution systems.
  • Support projects throughout their lifecycle, from feasibility to commissioning.
  • Engage in client meetings to present engineering work.
  • Occasional travel to client or project sites may be required.
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Act as Engineer of Record for solar PV projects of all sizes.
  • Provide specialized technical input and present complex solutions to clients.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of team outputs.
  • Contribute to the development of technical proposals.
  • Estimate engineering budgets and schedules.
  • Review and approve work prepared by the team.
  • Ensure adherence to technical and safety standards in all design work.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • BA/BS in Electrical Engineering (preferred) with 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in electrical design for commercial and utility-scale solar PV systems.
  • EIT license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least eight (8) years of engineering experience.
  • PE license preferred.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with industry software such as NREL SAM, ForgeSolar, and Helioscope.
  • Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems and other renewable technologies.
  • Knowledge of MV AC Collection System Design.
  • Strong understanding of NEC and related codes (IBC, NFPA 855).
  • Ability to lead engineering tasks with excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in full EPC and Design/Build projects.
