Position Overview

AECOM is seeking a Solar Engineer to join the Renewables and Microgrid Team within our Energy Practice Engineering Center of Excellence. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely or from various Energy offices across the United States.

Our team delivers a comprehensive array of electrical engineering services across various sectors, including transmission systems, renewable energy generation (Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Wind), and next-generation energy solutions. We are looking for a seasoned engineering professional with a strong background in solar PV design and power engineering to enhance our client relationships and expand our portfolio. Ideal candidates will possess extensive experience in solar engineering and a proven track record of leading projects.

The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and capable of making independent decisions while collaborating with senior staff. The focus should be on the power industry, particularly in solar engineering, design, and associated interconnection and distribution systems. Experience with battery energy storage and wind power is advantageous. This role presents an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a solid technical foundation seeking to advance into project leadership.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the solar PV electrical engineering design for assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with Project Engineers and Managers to develop design schedules and budgets.
  • Support business development initiatives related to renewable energy projects.
  • Monitor project progress to ensure timely and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Design solar PV systems, including array layouts, DC string sizing, and utility interconnections.
  • Conduct solar PV system energy production modeling.
  • Develop specifications for solar construction and equipment.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including NEC maximum system voltage and conductor sizing.
  • Assist in producing drawings, including one-line and three-line diagrams.
  • Prepare Bill of Materials and conduct cost estimation for PV systems.
  • Support projects throughout their lifecycle, from feasibility to commissioning.
  • Engage in client meetings to present engineering work.
  • Occasional travel to project sites may be required.
Level-Specific Responsibilities:
  • Act as Engineer of Record for solar PV projects of all sizes.
  • Provide specialized technical input for studies and design efforts.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of team outputs.
  • Contribute to the development of technical proposals.
  • Estimate engineering budgets and schedules.
  • Review and approve work prepared by the team.
  • Ensure adherence to technical and safety standards in all design work.
Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
  • BA/BS in Electrical Engineering or related field and 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in electrical design for commercial and utility-scale solar PV systems.
  • EIT license is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least eight (8) years of engineering experience preferred.
  • PE license is preferred.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with industry software such as NREL SAM, ForgeSolar, and Helioscope.
  • Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems and other renewable technologies.
  • Knowledge of MV AC Collection System Design.
  • Strong understanding of NEC and related codes.
  • Ability to lead engineering tasks with excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with full EPC and Design/Build projects.
