Sustainability Associate – Berkeley

Position Overview

Bright Green Strategies is looking to expand its Green Construction consulting team by adding a LEED & GreenPoint Rated Associate. This team is dedicated to providing sustainable building, energy efficiency, and construction solutions to developers of multi-family housing in California.

The Sustainability Associate will play a vital role in supporting the construction team by offering expertise that fosters the development of high-performance and environmentally friendly buildings. This position is essential for meeting sustainability objectives related to Energy Star, GreenPoint Rated, and LEED for Homes certifications. The Associate will also participate in on-site evaluations, research, data collection, analysis, and reporting on various residential projects. We seek a proactive individual with strong problem-solving abilities who is eager to collaborate within a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver consulting services for LEED for Homes, GreenPoint Rated, and HERS.
  • Collaborate with teams of developers, architects, engineers, and contractors to achieve sustainability objectives and effectively communicate energy-efficient design strategies and green building proposals.
  • Advise the development team on potential construction challenges related to the Green building process.
  • Recommend strategies to reduce energy consumption by assessing potential technologies for building applications and leveraging insights from previous projects.
  • Propose enhancements for water efficiency, indoor air quality, and the selection of materials and resources in building projects.
  • Work alongside the energy modeling team, serving as a liaison to optimize energy efficiency through effective modeling.
  • Identify essential modifications needed to meet goals with multiple priorities.
  • Conduct field assessments, on-site diagnostics, and data collection for new residential construction projects.
  • Define sustainability goals, staffing needs, and tasks necessary for project success.
  • Oversee project budgets and timelines to ensure adherence to deadlines and financial constraints, while evaluating the cost-benefit dynamics of the project.
  • Report project status to leadership and collaborate on strategic issues impacting project outcomes.
  • Maintain open communication with the project team, clarifying expectations and motivating team members.
  • Keep project information current in management tools, including writing technical reports and addressing client inquiries.
  • Establish and nurture effective working relationships within the company and with external partners.
  • Assist the development team in navigating local green building requirements.
  • Facilitate cooperation among technical and non-technical staff, consultants, and external agencies to complete assigned tasks.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve issues with competing priorities between internal and external stakeholders.
  • Foster and develop new and existing client relationships.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. in Engineering, Architecture, Energy Management, Environmental Sciences, or Construction Management, with a strong interest in building science.
  • Familiarity with LEED, GreenPoint Rated, Title-24 Energy Efficiency Standards, and CALGreen.
  • Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) certification is advantageous.
  • Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification is a plus.
  • Experience with energy modeling software (e.g., Energy Pro) is beneficial.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Ability to lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds may be required.

Essential Skills:

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong written communication abilities, including client reports and correspondence.

Project Management:

  • Proficient in establishing priorities, planning, and scheduling work, with experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Adept at analyzing construction scenarios in the field and recommending appropriate actions.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions based on established protocols.
  • Basic photography skills for documentation purposes.

Analytical:

  • Experience in research and information compilation from various sources.
  • Ability to interpret regulations and procedures, particularly in performance testing.
  • Competence in reading and understanding architectural, mechanical, and civil plans and specifications.
  • Basic mathematical skills for calculations and data entry.

Computational/Software:

  • Strong analytical and computational skills with various software tools, including:
  • LEED Online, HERS registry (CHEERS or CALCerts), and project management applications like Redbooth or ProCore.
  • Intermediate proficiency in office tools such as Google Calendar, Dropbox, email, and word processing software.
