Sustainability Associate – Berkeley

Position Overview

Bright Green Strategies is in search of a LEED & GreenPoint Rated Associate to enhance its expanding Green Construction consulting team. This team delivers sustainable building, energy efficiency, and construction solutions to multi-family housing developers across California.

The role of the Sustainability Associate involves supporting the construction team by offering expertise that fosters the development of high-performance and sustainable buildings. This is essential for meeting sustainability objectives for Energy Star, GreenPoint Rated, and LEED for Homes certifications. The Associate will also participate in on-site evaluations, research, data gathering, analysis, and reporting on various residential projects. We seek a proactive individual with strong problem-solving abilities and a desire to collaborate within a team environment. The Sustainability Associate will operate from our office in Berkeley, California.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct LEED for Homes, GreenPoint Rated, and HERS consulting services.
  • Collaborate with teams of building developers, architects, engineers, and general contractors to achieve sustainability targets and effectively communicate energy-efficient design models and green building strategies.
  • Engage with the development team regarding potential construction challenges related to the Green building process.
  • Advise clients on strategies to minimize energy consumption by assessing potential technologies for building applications and leveraging insights from prior projects.
  • Recommend improvements for water efficiency, indoor air quality, and the materials utilized in construction projects.
  • Coordinate with the energy modeling team, serving as a liaison between modeling and design teams to enhance energy efficiency through energy modeling.
  • Identify essential elements that need modification to meet goals with multiple priorities.
  • Perform on-site assessments, diagnostics, data collection, and analysis for new residential construction projects.
  • Define sustainability objectives, staffing needs, and tasks necessary for the successful completion of projects.
  • Oversee project budgets and timelines to ensure adherence to deadlines and financial constraints. Monitor project progress and provide completion updates for invoicing purposes.
  • Report project status to the CEO and collaborate on both short- and long-term issues that may impact project success.
  • Maintain clear communication with the project team, clarifying expectations for each member and fostering motivation and challenge.
  • Keep project information current in management tools, including writing field and technical reports, addressing client concerns, and interpreting technical documents and regulations.
  • Establish and nurture effective working relationships within the company and with external contacts.
  • Assist the development team in understanding local green building requirements.
  • Facilitate cooperation among technical and non-technical staff, consultants, and professionals from external agencies to complete assigned tasks and projects.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve issues with competing priorities between internal departments and external entities.
  • Build and enhance relationships with new and existing clients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. in Engineering, Architecture, Energy Management, Environmental Sciences, or Construction Management with a demonstrated interest in building science.
  • Familiarity with LEED, GreenPoint Rated, Title-24 Energy Efficiency Standards, and CALGreen.
  • Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) rater certification is a plus.
  • Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of energy modeling software (Energy Pro) is a plus.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds may be necessary.

Essential Skills:

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong written communication and editing abilities, including client reports, correspondence, and meeting documentation.

Project Management:

  • Proficient in establishing priorities, planning, and scheduling work. Experience managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyze construction scenarios in the field and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Independently capable of making decisions based on established procedures and discerning which issues require CEO attention.
  • Basic photography skills for creating field reports.

Analytical:

  • Experience in conducting research and compiling information from various sources.
  • Skill in interpreting regulations and procedures, particularly in performance testing scenarios.
  • Ability to read and understand architectural, mechanical, and civil plans and specifications.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including calculating averages, percentages, and areas, and inputting numerical data into spreadsheets.

Computational/Software:

  • Strong analytical and computational skills with proficiency in various web-based and local software tools, including:
  • LEED Online, HERS registry (CHEERS or CALCerts), and commonly used project management software (e.g., Redbooth, ProCore).
  • Intermediate proficiency in basic office tools, including Google Calendar, Dropbox, email, word processing, and spreadsheets.
