Sustainability Associate – Overview

We are seeking a motivated LEED & GreenPoint Rated Associate to enhance our expanding Green Construction consulting team. This team is focused on delivering green building, energy-efficient, and construction solutions tailored for multi-family housing developers across California.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide consulting services for LEED for Homes, GreenPoint Rated, and HERS.
  • Collaborate with teams of developers, architects, engineers, and contractors to achieve sustainability objectives and effectively communicate energy-efficient design models and green building proposals.
  • Advise the development team on potential construction challenges related to the Green building process.
  • Recommend strategies to minimize energy consumption by assessing potential technologies for building applications and leveraging insights from previous projects.
  • Suggest improvements for water efficiency, indoor air quality, and the selection of materials and resources in building projects.
  • Act as a liaison between the energy modeling team and the design team, assisting in optimizing energy efficiency through energy modeling.
  • Identify essential modifications needed to meet sustainability goals amidst multiple priorities.
  • Conduct on-site assessments, diagnostics, and data collection for residential new construction projects.
  • Define sustainability goals, staffing, and tasks necessary for successful project completion.
  • Oversee project budgets and schedules to ensure timely completion while adhering to financial constraints.
  • Report project status to leadership and collaborate on strategic issues affecting project success.
  • Maintain clear communication with the project team, ensuring clarity of expectations and motivating team members.
  • Keep project information updated in management tools, write technical reports, and address client concerns and needs.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships within the company and with external contacts.
  • Support the development team in understanding local green building requirements.
  • Facilitate cooperation among technical and non-technical staff, consultants, and external agencies to complete assigned tasks.
  • Identify and resolve issues with competing priorities between internal departments and external entities.
  • Foster and expand relationships with new and existing clients.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. in Engineering, Architecture, Energy Management, Environmental Sciences, or Construction Management with a focus on building science.
  • Familiarity with LEED, GreenPoint Rated, Title-24 Energy Efficiency Standards, and CALGreen.
  • Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) rater certification is advantageous.
  • Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of energy modeling software (e.g., Energy Pro) is beneficial.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Essential Skills:

Communication:

  • Exceptional verbal communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong written communication skills, including client reports and correspondence.

Project Management:

  • Proficient in establishing priorities, planning, and scheduling work while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Adept at analyzing construction scenarios in the field and proposing appropriate actions.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions based on established procedures.
  • Basic photography skills for creating field reports.

Analytical:

  • Experience in conducting research and compiling information from various sources.
  • Ability to interpret regulations and procedures effectively.
  • Competence in reading and understanding architectural, mechanical, and civil plans and specifications.
  • Basic mathematical skills for calculations and data entry.

Computational/Software:

  • Strong proficiency in using various web-based and local software tools, including LEED Online and project management applications.
  • Intermediate skills in basic office tools such as Google Calendar, Dropbox, and spreadsheets.
