Sustainability Associate – Berkeley
Position Overview
Bright Green Strategies is looking to enhance its Green Construction consulting team by adding a LEED & GreenPoint Rated Associate. This team delivers sustainable building, energy efficiency, and construction solutions to multi-family housing developers across California.
The role of the Sustainability Associate involves supporting the construction team by offering expertise that fosters the development of high-performance and sustainable buildings. This is essential for meeting sustainability objectives for Energy Star, GreenPoint Rated, and LEED for Homes certifications. The Associate will also participate in on-site evaluations, research, data gathering, analysis, and reporting on various residential projects. We seek a proactive individual with strong problem-solving abilities and a willingness to collaborate within a team environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct LEED for Homes, GreenPoint Rated, and HERS consulting services.
- Collaborate with teams of building developers, architects, engineers, and general contractors to achieve sustainability targets and effectively communicate energy-efficient design models and green building proposals.
- Engage with the development team regarding potential construction challenges related to the Green building process.
- Provide recommendations to clients on reducing energy consumption by assessing potential technologies for building applications and leveraging insights from previous projects.
- Advise on enhancing water efficiency, indoor air quality, and the materials and resources utilized in construction projects.
- Work alongside the energy modeling team, acting as a liaison between modeling and design teams to optimize energy efficiency through energy modeling.
- Identify essential elements that need modification to meet goals with multiple priorities.
- Conduct field assessments, on-site diagnostics, and data collection and analysis for residential new construction projects.
- Define sustainability goals, staffing, and tasks necessary for the successful completion of projects.
- Oversee project budgets and schedules to ensure deadlines are met and costs are managed effectively.
- Report on project status to the CEO and collaborate on issues that may impact project success.
- Maintain clear communication with the project team, clarifying expectations for each member and fostering motivation.
- Keep project information updated in management tools, prepare technical reports, and address client concerns.
- Establish and nurture effective working relationships within the company and with external contacts.
- Support the development team by engaging with local jurisdictions to understand their green building requirements.
- Facilitate cooperation among technical and non-technical staff, consultants, and professionals from external agencies to complete assigned tasks.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve issues with multiple priorities between internal departments and external entities.
- Build and enhance relationships with new and existing clients.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- B.A. or B.S. in Engineering, Architecture, Energy Management, Environmental Sciences, or Construction Management with a focus on building science.
- Familiarity with LEED, GreenPoint Rated, Title-24 Energy Efficiency Standards, and CALGreen.
- Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) rater certification is a plus.
- Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification is a plus.
- Knowledge of energy modeling software (Energy Pro) is a plus.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Ability to lift or move items up to 25 pounds may be necessary.

- Basic photography skills for creating field reports.
Analytical:
- Experience in research and compiling information from various sources.
- Ability to interpret regulations and procedures flexibly.
- Competence in reading and understanding architectural, mechanical, and civil plans and specifications.
- Basic mathematical skills for calculations and data entry.
Computational/Software:
- Strong analytical and computational skills with various web-based and local software tools.
- Familiarity with LEED Online, HERS registry, and project management software applications.
- Intermediate proficiency in basic office tools, including Google Calendar, Dropbox, email, and spreadsheets.
