Job Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, certified or trainee, to work in our Clinical Cancer Center and Ambulatory Surgery Center pharmacies. This position is under general pharmacist supervision, coordinating and performing technical activities of dispensing areas, requiring one-on-one contact with patients in their hospital room, discretionary patient room entry, and collaboration with hospital unit staff.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Preparation of Patient-Specific Sterile Products
    • Accurately compound medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatient requests.
    • Using appropriate PPE, including CSTD as necessary.
    • Preparation according to NIOSH, USP, and SOP guidelines.
  2. Daily Cleanroom Maintenance Activities
    • Cleaning of hood in accordance with SOP.
    • Decontamination of hood as required.
    • Review and documentation of hood maintenance activities.
  3. Patient/ Customer Service at Triage Window
    • Communicate with the general public, patients, and other healthcare personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
    • Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.
  4. Order Entry of Prescriptions
    • Enter patient profile information.
    • Enter patient coverage/third-party information.
    • Read and interpret the prescription, including calculation of dose and/or quantity to be dispensed, and enter into the computer.
    • Generate a "Note to Dispensing Pharmacist" as needed.
  5. Filling/Refilling Prescriptions
    • Read label for accuracy and correct as needed.
    • Label and package the correct medication.
  6. Maintaining Area Orderliness and Cleanliness
  7. Assisting in On-the-Job Training of New Technicians
  8. Coordinating Technical Activities with Other Members of the Team
  9. Conducting Assigned Audits in Patient Care Clinic Areas (Certified Technicians Only)
    • Audit area for compliance with medication security, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration date, and appropriate drug storage and references.
  10. Performing Activities Involving Narcotics and Controlled Substances
    • Conduct weekly and monthly inventories.
    • Order replacement supplies from internal sources.
    • Audit records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances.
    • Resolve discrepancies on issuance forms.
  11. Generating and/or Maintaining Appropriate Records Related to Prescription Dispensing
    • Return to stock medications that have not been picked up by patients and generate a credit form to forward to Pharmacy Data Processing.
    • Enter all transferred drugs on Inventory Transfer Form.
    • Order diabetic, hemophiliac, and miscellaneous supplies from Hospital Stores.
    • Perform daily and monthly drug inventories as requested.
  12. Preparing Prescriptions for Mailing and Shipping
  13. Answering the Dedicated Prescription Refill Telephone Line
    • Generate prescription refill label.
    • Verify address for prescription(s) to be mailed and the date medication is needed.
    • Fill out call check and note pickup time or date to be mailed.
Requirements
  1. Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  2. National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  3. High school diploma or the equivalent.
  4. Experience: Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.

  • Experience with Public Contact/Customer Service.

  • Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level.
