Role Summary

We are in search of a Senior Electrical Transmission Engineer to lead a collaborative and agile team in a dynamic setting, tackling complex issues related to electric transmission. The ideal candidate will function as a Lead Engineer and Project Manager for electric transmission line design initiatives, encompassing both overhead and underground systems for major utility companies as well as regional providers. The candidate will utilize NESC, ASCE, ACI, NEC, and other relevant standards in the engineering and design of diverse capital and maintenance projects ranging from 34.5 kV to 500 kV.

Moreover, the candidate will oversee a team of engineers engaged in engineering analyses, PLS-CADD modeling, structural loading assessments, design of structural framing and hardware assemblies, drafting plans and specifications, and preparing bill of materials and procurement documents throughout the project lifecycle, including planning, engineering, environmental considerations, permitting, and construction management.

This senior leadership position entails key responsibilities in client engagement, personnel management, proposal development, scope definition and modification, project execution, and business development for the team's comprehensive workload. The candidate will be expected to articulate clear expectations, objectives, and vision; manage the performance of direct reports; inspire, coach, and mentor skilled professionals; and effectively delegate project tasks. The candidate must be adept at fostering collaboration and a positive team culture to achieve successful outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple design teams concurrently executing various projects and programs for a diverse client base.
  • Develop engineering talent by training, coaching, and nurturing the team.
  • Supervise staff by approving timesheets and conducting the annual performance review process.
  • Actively participate as a member of the leadership team within the Transmission Line Section.
  • Craft responses to RFPs, RFIs, and RFQs from clients for new projects, including proposal creation and scope definition.
  • Embrace a growth mindset to encourage creative problem-solving for our clients' most intricate challenges.
  • Promote continuous improvement to enhance streamlined processes and tools that advance departmental technical resources through innovation and automation.
  • Delegate tasks to staff, forecast and plan their future workload, and conduct recruitment activities to support ambitious growth objectives.
  • Drive the quality control process for the execution team to ensure the highest quality in all deliverables.
  • Engage with clients to maximize relationships, facilitate business development growth, and foster long-term partnerships.
  • Manage the health of the project portfolio through proactive project management, tracking scope, schedules, and budgets with support from Leidos' Project Management Office.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the design of electric utility transmission systems with a Bachelor's degree, or 8+ years of such experience with a Master's degree.
  • Proficiency in PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
  • Proven track record of exceptional communication skills to serve as the primary point of contact for existing and prospective clients.
  • Strong business acumen with a history of understanding and meeting key project performance metrics.
  • Willingness to work onsite in a client office, with some periodic travel as needed.
  • A passion for developing staff through mentoring.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience supervising staff.
  • M.S. degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Experience with TOWER.
  • EIT or PE certification.
  • Familiarity with LPILE or FAD, Mathcad, AutoCAD or MicroStation, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is advantageous.

Work Location: This position will require in-person attendance, with options for a full-time or hybrid schedule.
