Position Overview:

The Building Engineer is responsible for the effective operation, maintenance, and repair of various building systems, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components. This role requires the ability to handle heavy equipment and work in varying environmental conditions. The Building Engineer will respond to service requests and manage emergency situations efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical systems, including air handling units, pumps, and control systems.
  • Install and troubleshoot electrical circuits as needed.
  • Conduct repairs on plumbing fixtures and perform pipe work, including sweating and threading.
  • Prepare systems for maintenance by draining and securing them appropriately.
  • Execute minor carpentry tasks, such as replacing ceiling tiles and repairing door hardware.
  • Perform basic electrical maintenance, including bulb and ballast replacements.
  • Maintain optimal performance of air handling units by cleaning coils.
  • Assemble and maintain chilled and hot water systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections and operations of emergency generators.
  • Order necessary materials for repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance, including filter changes and lubrication.
  • Inspect and document the condition of mechanical and electrical systems, providing reports to supervisors.
  • Undertake additional duties as required within the scope of responsibilities.
Qualifications:
  • Certification in relevant mechanical trades or trade school in HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, or Hydraulics.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in operating central plant equipment and building systems.
  • Proven ability to repair electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Experience in safely isolating systems for maintenance work.
  • Skilled in soldering and brazing copper pipes.
  • Basic carpentry skills are essential.
  • Strong understanding of auxiliary building systems, including fire safety and emergency generators.
  • Familiarity with general building systems such as vertical lifts and overhead doors.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to operate vehicles up to 1-1/2 tons.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices typical in maintenance operations.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing and lifting.
  • Proficient in using various hand and power tools safely.
