Position Overview

This role is situated within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Police Service, dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of Veterans, patients, staff, and visitors at VA facilities. The primary objective of the Police Service is to ensure a secure environment that allows the VA to fulfill its commitment to America's Veterans.

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  1. Acting as a Law Enforcement Officer, primarily operating on properties associated with the Veterans Affairs Department, including those owned, leased, or licensed by the VA.
  2. Delivering policing services across various jurisdictional settings, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of distinct enforcement rules and the ability to apply the appropriate laws and regulations.
  3. Providing services at multiple VA facilities spread across extensive geographical areas, which may include different states and municipalities.
  4. Executing certain duties away from VA properties in compliance with federal laws, regulations, and VA policies.
  5. Ensuring the safety of Veterans, volunteers, and others on departmental premises, while also safeguarding U.S. officials and oneself during potentially hazardous situations.
  6. Protecting sensitive medical information of Veterans, employees, and visitors from unauthorized access, adhering to privacy laws and regulations.
  7. Informing individuals of their rights and safeguarding constitutional and civil rights during interactions. Conducting investigations related to VA, transporting prisoners, searching for patients, and engaging in disaster response efforts.
  8. Performing additional tasks as assigned.

  • Selected candidates will undergo a urinalysis screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment.

  • Background and security investigations will be conducted.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process is necessary.
  • Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination programs is required for all VA Health Care Personnel.
  • Compliance with COVID-19 vaccination requirements is mandatory for all Veterans Health Administration personnel.
  • Successful completion of the Basic Police Officer Academy is required.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-06 grade level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in federal service, demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful performance in this role.

Specialized experience includes familiarity with basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, and responsibilities related to maintaining order and protecting life and property.

Experience may be gained through work on a police force, military police service, or roles involving visitor protection and law enforcement in various environments.

Physical Requirements: The Police Officer must possess the physical capability to lift or carry injured individuals, evacuate persons during emergencies, and maintain high standards of physical fitness.
