Position ResponsibilitiesWe are seeking a full-time, board-certified Cardiologist for our Medicine Sub-Specialty Care Service Line.
This role involves providing cardiology services for both inpatients and outpatients at the Kansas City VA Medical Center and associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).
Key duties include but are not limited to: - Conducting comprehensive cardiology evaluations for both established and newly referred patients, including electronic consultations (e-Consults) in the Cardiology clinics, inpatient wards, or Emergency Department for potential cardiac issues.
- Managing a patient caseload that may include both inpatient and outpatient care.
- Admitting and overseeing patients admitted to the cardiology service.
- Participating in the rotating coverage of the inpatient cardiology service and sharing after-hours and weekend call responsibilities with fellow cardiology physicians.
- Collaborating effectively with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and physician colleagues, ensuring clear communication and documentation.
- Conducting patient interviews, examinations, selecting appropriate diagnostic tests, and interpreting results to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
- Maintaining clear communication and documentation with patients and medical staff to facilitate coordinated care.
- Completing medical records in compliance with the Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
- Engaging with trainees (Medical Students, Residents, Fellows, and Nurse Practitioners) to support the educational mission of the division.
- Required procedural skills include EKG/holter/event monitor review and interpretation, transthoracic echocardiography interpretation, transesophageal echocardiography performance and interpretation, temporary pacemaker insertion, Swan-Ganz catheter placement, direct current cardioversions, cardiac dysrhythmia diagnosis and management, nuclear cardiology, stress testing (both chemical and exercise), arterial puncture, cardiac catheterization (right and left heart), balloon angioplasty, coronary artery stenting, pericardiocentesis, and venipuncture.
- Participation in quality assurance initiatives and chart reviews.
- Collaborating with other departments to enhance cardiology-specific hospital-wide metrics.
- Conducting point-of-care audits and peer reviews as requested.
- Demonstrating corporate citizenship by serving as a leader or active member on Medical Center committees as needed and attending Medical Service Staff meetings.
- Upholding professional competency, courtesy, and flexibility while delivering the necessary services of this specialty.
- Effectively teaching and providing guidance to others involved in cardiology-related educational programs (including cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students).
- U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements specified in the job announcement.

Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are considered to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Preferred Experience:
Board Certified in cardiology with 2-3 years of post-fellowship experience.
