Public Sector Software Developer

San Francisco, California, United States Pavilion Full time

About Pavilion

Pavilion aims to revolutionize public procurement by harnessing cutting-edge technology. Governments spend approximately $2 trillion annually on essential goods and services, from school buses to medical supplies. Unfortunately, this process is often time-consuming and relies on outdated systems.

We believe that public buyers deserve user-friendly technology that rivals modern online shopping experiences. Our platform connects pre-qualified suppliers with government buyers, enabling them to deliver better services and fostering business participation in the public sector.

About this role

We are seeking a skilled Public Sector Software Developer with expertise in backend technologies to join our dynamic engineering team. As a key member, you will contribute to growing our marketplace and enhancing the way public servants discover and partner with businesses nationwide. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with experienced engineers, product managers, and designers to design and implement high-impact features, leveraging insights gained from interacting with government buyers to inspire innovative workflows in contract management, purchasing, and search.
  • Developing the world's most comprehensive database of government contractors. Our contract database serves as the core of how Pavilion supports public servants, and you will spearhead significant improvements to take us to the next level.
  • Tackling complex technical challenges. In the past year, our team has addressed entity resolution, AI explainability, and the forefront of semantic search. You will master vector databases, utilize AI to scale data acquisition, and push the boundaries of document understanding.
  • Mentoring team members, sharing your expertise to elevate our collective skills. You will drive enhancements to our core backend technology, patterns, and best practices.
  • Shaping our shared engineering and company culture. As an early-stage startup, you will have a substantial impact – not only on our product but also on how we work as a team.

To succeed in this role, you should possess:

  • At least 2 years of industry experience in web development across the stack. You have built numerous features and even led small project teams.
  • A minimum of 1 year of professional experience with Python. You are proficient in its patterns and best practices, and you have experience with at least one web framework (we use Django).
  • Some professional experience with React. You can develop full-stack features independently, and you are eager to refine your frontend skills and deploy user-facing features.
  • A track record of making pragmatic technical decisions to ship code quickly while maintaining a high quality bar.
  • An ownership mindset. You value autonomy and seek out ownership. You want to solve hard problems and consistently deliver impact, even when things become ambiguous.
  • Strong teamwork skills. You are an effective communicator, and you perform your best work as part of an empathetic, high-performing team. You are always learning and growing rapidly.

Our Compensation Philosophy

We strive to offer fair, competitive, and right-sized compensation that meets the needs of our employees. For our size and stage, we aim to be generous with equity and meet individual salary expectations. We provide a clear and transparent compensation offer upfront.

  • Salary Range: The expected salary range for this position is $133,000 - $142,000.
  • Equity Package: We offer a higher than average equity package compared to companies in our stage.
