One of the critical strategies for enhancing safety is through adverse event reporting. This role is responsible for overseeing the adverse event reporting system, providing daily support for the detection, processing, and reporting of adverse events across the organization. This position will initiate, coordinate, and manage strategic initiatives aimed at reducing risks throughout the HMH Enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for a Clinical Risk and Loss Prevention Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health involves:

  • Working collaboratively with Executive, Regional, Local, Nursing, and Clinical Leadership to foster a sustainable culture of risk prevention that minimizes harm to patients and team members, enhancing the overall human experience.
  • Partnering with Regional and local Campus Risk Management and Quality/Safety leadership to cultivate a culture of safety and reporting, promoting a Just Culture that encourages non-punitive reporting of adverse safety events.
  • Continuously refining the Hackensack Meridian Health Adverse Event Reporting platform to align with stakeholder needs, enhancing efficiency and ensuring high-quality information.
  • Utilizing the adverse event reporting platform as a resource for leaders to gain insights into harm within their business units.
  • Leading the governance framework to engage stakeholders in developing a reporting platform that meets the requirements of Enterprise Risk Management, the Department of Patient Safety and Quality, and the Office of Patient Experience.
  • Collaborating with data analytics to create de-identified dashboards that provide trend information.
  • Presenting findings at network and campus committees to raise awareness about system learning derived from reporting.
  • Integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, and automation into the existing system while monitoring for unintended consequences and ensuring quality assurance.
  • Identifying barriers to reporting and developing solutions that promote proactive stakeholder involvement, ultimately transforming the reporting culture.
  • Cooperating with site risk, patient safety/quality, patient experience, and human resources leadership to address adverse events and grievances, employing analytical skills to recommend disposition strategies.
  • Encouraging a safety culture where reporting is valued and the use of the Onelink adverse event reporting system is actively monitored.
  • Overseeing risk management software to enhance risk mitigation and improve safety culture across the network.
  • Providing timely reports to senior leadership regarding site activities.
  • Creating and implementing programs that promote a safe environment for patients, visitors, team members, and volunteers.
  • Conducting statistical analyses for review by relevant committees as needed.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to optimize workflows for event reporting and analysis.
  • Designing educational and training initiatives for the platform to drive clinical and operational risk reduction.
  • Envisioning and implementing enterprise-wide clinical risk guidelines, protocols, and standards.
  • Developing Key Performance Indicators and Dashboards for Clinical Risk & Loss Prevention.
  • Providing litigation support to the legal team and external defense counsel.
  • Serving as a senior clinical risk advisor to the organization.
  • Leading or co-leading the Patient Safety Organization(s) for HMH.
  • Performing other duties and projects as assigned.
  • Adhering to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the healthcare sector.
  • At least 3 years of experience in Healthcare Risk Management or Patient Safety.
  • A strong understanding of Project Management, Enterprise Risk Management, Process Review, Root Cause Analysis, Emergency Management, and Regulatory Compliance.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Business Management, or a related health field.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Risk Management Certification.
