Job Overview

Position Summary: This role is designed for remote work within the United States, with occasional travel requirements.

We are in search of a Systems Engineer specializing in Power Servers, particularly with IBM i expertise. This engineer will join the Power Systems services division, which delivers both project-oriented and managed services to clients, focusing on IT infrastructure architecture, design, and remote management of extensive computing and storage solutions. The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of data center operations, IT infrastructure design and analysis, deployment and implementation of infrastructure, as well as remote monitoring and administration of large server environments, including backup and recovery processes.

Compensation is based on performance. Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operations of IBM i servers, including monitoring space usage, CPU, memory, and overall performance.
  • Provide comprehensive support for all IBM i system-related issues.
  • Implement upgrades and patches for IBM i servers and associated components.
  • Maintain documentation of best practices specific to the environment.
  • Collaborate closely with client administration and application teams to offer assistance, support, security, and troubleshooting.
  • Deliver SOX-compliant evidence, audits, logs, and respond to assigned audit points.
  • Engage with business owners and vendors on projects and issue resolution.
  • Assess the technology environment from a strategic perspective and recommend enhancements.
  • Manage Disaster Recovery configurations and execute related tests.
  • Create new IBM i LPARs utilizing HMC tools.
  • Demonstrate experience in performance tuning and change management.
  • Exhibit experience in project planning and design.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve job failures and technical challenges.
  • Identify additional service opportunities.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients.
  • Possess strong communication skills for client interactions.
  • Effectively manage challenging client situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Installation and support of IBM i systems.
  • Experience with IBM i upgrades.
  • Proficiency in backup and recovery processes.
  • Understanding of availability issues and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Remote management and support capabilities.
  • Familiarity with general network concepts and the implementation of Power Systems within existing and new networks.
  • HMC configuration and administration skills.
  • Knowledge of IBM PowerVM, including VIOS configuration and advanced PowerVM features.
  • Familiarity with high availability solutions such as PowerHA, Mimix, FSFC, and FSR is preferred.

Qualifications:

  • A BA or BS degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in client-facing roles with effective presentation skills.
  • Understanding of virtualization environments for Power Servers is essential.
  • Strong working knowledge of IBM products, including Power Systems, Storage, and Networking is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • This position is typically situated in a standard business office or home office environment.
  • Utilization of general office equipment and personal computers is necessary.
  • Travel may be required, including both auto and air travel, though infrequently.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and/or overtime may be necessary.
