Position Highlights

  • Work schedule: Monday to Friday.
  • Full-time commitment, totaling 40 hours weekly.
  • Primary location: Wethersfield, with required travel across the state.
  • Shifts: First Shift commences between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM; Second Shift begins at 2:00 PM, with potential weekend and evening hours. Each shift lasts 8 hours.

Role Responsibilities

Motor Vehicle Inspectors play a crucial role in enforcing laws related to motor vehicles, focusing on areas such as:

  • Inspection of commercial vehicles and weigh stations
  • Auto theft prevention and investigation
  • Enforcement of regulations for auto dealers
  • School bus safety oversight
  • Conducting criminal investigations

Inspectors are tasked with independently executing a comprehensive range of inspection and investigative activities concerning motor vehicles, dealer and repairer facilities, vehicle safety, consumer grievances, and verification of essential documentation. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Division holds statewide authority for arrests related to motor vehicle offenses and comprises several specialized units managed by Motor Vehicle Lieutenants and a Division Chief.

Requirements for the Position

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license throughout employment.
  • Residency in Connecticut is required prior to appointment.
  • Submission of a valid law enforcement officer certification in Connecticut is mandatory for application consideration.

Application Process

The selection process consists of several stages, including:

  • Application submission with required certifications.
  • Medical evaluations, including physical examinations and potential drug screenings.
  • Interviews conducted by sworn members of the division.
  • Background investigations covering employment, education, and criminal history.
  • Polygraph examinations assessing integrity and honesty.
  • Psychological evaluations to determine suitability for law enforcement roles.

Successful candidates will undergo a 12-week field training program and must complete the North American Standard Inspection training, which requires out-of-state attendance for two weeks.

About the Department

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles is dedicated to ensuring the safety and health of the motoring public through education, outreach, and enforcement in vehicle weight and safety inspections, traffic enforcement, and investigations of motor vehicle-related complaints.

The primary goal of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program is to minimize accidents and hazardous incidents involving commercial vehicles. The division operates from multiple fixed inspection sites and patrols various highways and secondary roads throughout the state.
