The State of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is actively seeking qualified professionals with valid Connecticut Police Certifications to serve as Vehicle Compliance Inspectors within the Commercial Vehicle Safety Division (CVSD).

Position Highlights

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday.

Full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.

Location: Wethersfield, with travel required across the state.

Shifts: First Shift begins between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM; Second Shift starts at 2:00 PM, with potential weekend and evening hours. Each shift lasts 8 hours.

Role Responsibilities

As a Vehicle Compliance Inspector, you will be responsible for enforcing motor vehicle laws, focusing on areas such as:

  • Motor carrier inspections and weigh stations
  • Auto theft investigations
  • Enforcement of auto dealer regulations
  • School bus safety
  • Criminal investigations

You will independently conduct a comprehensive range of inspections and investigations related to motor vehicles, dealer and repair facilities, safety compliance, consumer complaints, and verification of documentation.

The CVSD possesses statewide arrest authority concerning motor vehicle regulations and is organized into specialized units supervised by Motor Vehicle Lieutenants and a Division Chief.

Travel Requirements

Inspectors in the CVSD are expected to travel throughout the state. Appointees will adhere to the conditions outlined in the Connecticut Police & Fire Union (NP-5) contract, including the biennial shift and work location bidding process.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Hold a High School diploma or GED.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license during employment.
  • Establish residency in Connecticut prior to becoming a sworn member of the CVSD.
  • Submit proof of certification as a law enforcement officer in Connecticut by the application deadline.

Selection Process

The hiring process includes several stages:

  • Application Period: Submit your application and certification.
  • Medical Evaluation: May include an agility assessment and a comprehensive physical examination.
  • Interview Panel: Interviews conducted by sworn members of CVSD.
  • Background Investigation: Thorough review of employment, education, and criminal history.
  • Polygraph Examination: Assessment of honesty and integrity.
  • Psychological Evaluation: Combination of written tests and interviews.

Successful completion of all selection phases qualifies you for consideration as a Vehicle Compliance Inspector. Newly appointed inspectors will undergo 12 weeks of field training and must successfully complete the North American Standard Inspection (NASTI) certification program.

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is committed to ensuring the safety and health of the motoring public through education, outreach, and enforcement in vehicle safety inspections, heavy-duty diesel emission testing, and traffic enforcement.

The primary goal of the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP) is to minimize accidents and hazardous incidents involving commercial motor vehicles. The CVSD operates from multiple inspection sites and patrols highways and secondary roads across the state.
