THE POSITION
Under direct supervision, individuals in the role of Juvenile Correction Counselor (Entry) are responsible for overseeing and guiding youth involved in the justice system who are detained or committed to a County facility. The role involves learning to uphold order and structure within designated areas daily, teaching classes, providing counseling, and assisting detained youth in accessing various resources and opportunities. Counselors may also be tasked with offering support and guidance in community settings. The position is designed for those who are preparing for advancement to a more experienced level of counseling.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to work in a controlled, sometimes challenging environment.
- May require lifting objects over 100 pounds with assistance.
- Work is conducted in a detention facility, exposing employees to communicable diseases, disruptive individuals, and potentially aggressive situations.
- Work hours may include weekends, holidays, irregular shifts, on-call duties, and after-hours responsibilities.
- Learn to ensure the safety, daily care, and supervision of youth within a designated area, including counseling, mediating conflicts, and assisting in emergencies.
- Provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention counseling to youth.
- Refer youth to behavioral health services as necessary.
- Deliver general counseling and cognitive behavioral training to support or modify youth behavior.
- Facilitate Cognitive Behavioral Training (CBT) groups and implement behavioral management programs.
- Manage aggressive behavior and prepare daily behavior summaries and incident reports.
- Plan and conduct recreational and other activities for groups of youth.
- Monitor individual and group behaviors to prevent and manage conflicts.
- Process youth during intake, orienting them to facility expectations and social skills.
- Transport youth to medical, dental, court, or other essential appointments.
- Provide emergency first aid as required.
- Inspect mail and manage behavior management point totals.
- Conduct drug testing of youth.
- Assist in community-based rehabilitation programs, facilitating family conferences and providing educational support.
- May be required to appear in court as a witness.
Education: Completion of thirty (30) semester units from an accredited college or university, preferably in criminology, social work, psychology, sociology, or a related field.
OR
Experience: Six (6) months of relevant experience supervising groups in a detention environment.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid California Driver's license, Class C.
- Current First Aid and Personal Safety certification required within 60 days of appointment.
- Current CPR certification required within 60 days of appointment.
- Completion of training under Section 832 of the California Penal Code or equivalent within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Must meet minimum standards regarding citizenship, age, character, education, and physical/mental condition as per California Government Code.
- Completion of the Juvenile Counselor Core Course certified by the California Board of State and Community Corrections Standards and Training for Correctional Programs or equivalent within twelve (12) months of appointment.
- Mobility and Dexterity: Positions require stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, and repetitive motion for a significant portion of the shift.
- Lifting: May require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently.
- Vision: Close visual acuity is necessary for data analysis and monitoring surroundings.
- Hearing/Talking: Ability to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels and communicate effectively.
- Must pass physical and psychological exams as a condition of hire.
- Independent travel may be required for meetings and training.
- Background checks will be conducted prior to appointment.
- Drug testing will be performed in accordance with workplace policies.
- Must comply with child abuse reporting laws as a condition of employment.
- Some positions may require proficiency in a language other than English.
- Must demonstrate necessary knowledge and abilities for promotion within 18 months of appointment.
