We are in search of a seasoned Principal Design Engineer - Microarchitect who will take charge of the RTL development for various modules within a high-performance CPU core. A solid understanding of the pipeline stages in both in-order and out-of-order CPU architectures is essential. The selected candidate will oversee all facets of design, focusing on Performance, Power, and Area metrics.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Steering the micro-architecture and design of critical CPU components or multiple blocks within a CPU core.
  • Collaborating with the CPU modeling team to explore high-performance strategies.
  • Conducting microarchitecture development and specification, from initial high-level architectural exploration to detailed specifications.
  • Configuring design features and refining RTL design to meet power, performance, area, and timing objectives.
  • Providing functional verification support and contributing to the design verification strategy.
  • Assisting in the verification of RTL design performance targets.
  • Working alongside a multi-disciplinary engineering team to implement and validate physical design aspects, including timing, area, reliability, testability, and power consumption.
Preferred qualifications:
  • In-depth knowledge of microprocessor architecture, with expertise in areas such as:
    • Instruction fetch and decode, branch prediction
    • Instruction scheduling and register renaming
    • Out-of-order execution
    • Integer and Floating-point execution
    • Load/Store execution and prefetching
    • Cache and memory subsystems
  • Proficiency in Verilog and/or VHDL.
  • Experience with simulation tools and waveform debugging.
  • Understanding of logic design principles along with timing and power considerations.
  • MS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering with over 10 years of experience, or a BS degree with 15+ years of relevant experience.
Additional assets:
  • Experience in designing RISC-V, ARM, and/or MIPS CPUs.
  • Familiarity with hardware multi-threading, virtualization, and SIMD designs.
  • Knowledge of high-performance techniques and trade-offs in CPU microarchitecture.
  • Insight into low-power microarchitecture strategies.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Perl or Python.

The compensation for this role ranges from $225,000 to $285,000 annually. This role may also be eligible for equity and other discretionary bonuses. MIPS provides a comprehensive benefits package, including health, wellness, and financial benefits as part of a competitive total rewards program. Actual compensation will be determined based on various job-related factors, including skills, experience, and education.
