Program Overview

A Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) is a residential area that has developed a significant population of older adults, despite not being specifically designed for seniors. These communities provide a unique environment for seniors to maintain their independence as they age.

Key Responsibilities

The Jewish Association Serving the Aging is looking for a part-time Senior Client Support Specialist for a grant-supported role. Under the guidance of the NORC program's Associate Director, and in alignment with the standards of the social work profession and the requirements of the funding source, the Senior Client Support Specialist will be responsible for:
  • Evaluating the social and emotional needs of older adult clients and their families, using standardized assessment tools (e.g., PSA, EISEP-PATH); collaborating with other social work professionals as necessary.
  • Creating and executing comprehensive case plans that encompass a wide range of social services for older adult clients and their families, including:
    • Individual and family counseling to assist in resolving client and family issues.
    • Providing relevant information to clients and their families regarding normal physical, social, and psychological development, challenges posed by impairments, and coping strategies to maintain individual autonomy.
  • Offering detailed information about available health, welfare, education, and recreational services for older clients.
  • Assessing clients for eligibility for benefits, assisting with applications for entitlements, and advocating on their behalf.
  • Coordinating direct services such as transportation, home care, meals on wheels, public assistance, Medicare, Medicaid, emergency financial aid, legal assistance, protective services, vocational placement, and medical and psychiatric evaluations.
  • Assessing clients' ability to manage their affairs and protect themselves from potential abuse or exploitation, and making referrals to Adult Protective Services when necessary.
  • Connecting clients with other community organizations that can fulfill their needs and fostering collaborative relationships with external providers.
  • Conducting ongoing evaluations of clients' needs, monitoring the effectiveness of services, and adjusting case plans as needed.
  • Informing supervisors of any crisis situations or instances where additional guidance is required.
  • Facilitating group counseling sessions, community education, and caregiver support groups.
  • Overseeing community aides, interns, and volunteers.
  • Representing the agency at community meetings and conferences.
  • Participating in training sessions and team meetings.
  • Completing necessary case documentation, reports, and statistics.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.S.W. or a B.A./B.S. degree, or equivalent.
  • Strong writing and record-keeping abilities.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to learn and utilize program-specific software.
  • Willingness to travel to clients' residences using public transportation and navigate any obstacles present in clients' homes.
  • Knowledge of Yiddish, Russian, Spanish, or Patois may be advantageous.
  • Understanding and appreciation of the diverse roles of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and individual values in serving clients and their families.
