Position Overview:
The Healthcare Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering essential administrative and clinical services that promote the health and wellbeing of clients at ICL.
This position involves providing initial medical assessments and overseeing medication management for clients.The Healthcare Support Specialist collaborates closely with the medical team, including the ICL Medical Director and the Associate Chief Medical Officer, as well as program leadership.
This role requires maintaining effective working relationships with clients, healthcare professionals, and shelter staff.Qualifications and Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with formal training in healthcare support or a related field.
Preferred Certification and Experience:
At least one year of full-time experience in a healthcare support role or as a Medical Technologist. Current CPR/BLS certification is necessary. Experience working with individuals facing homelessness or substance use challenges is highly valued.
Key Responsibilities:
The Healthcare Support Specialist is expected to perform their duties ethically and safely, under the guidance of a physician.
It is essential for the Specialist to recognize their limitations and seek assistance when needed.Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
Administrative Tasks: Answering phone calls, welcoming clients, documenting patient information, assisting with medical benefits, managing correspondence, scheduling appointments, and facilitating hospital admissions or emergencies.
Clinical Responsibilities: Conducting medical history interviews, recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures, coordinating with pharmacies for medication, disposing of hazardous materials, authorizing prescription refills as directed, changing dressings, and ensuring the safe use of resources.
The Specialist must consistently practice universal precautions and perform all duties competently and compassionately, fostering positive relationships with clients and healthcare staff. Maintaining a professional appearance and adhering to facility policies is essential.
Essential Skills:
The ability to maintain confidentiality, communicate effectively, and engage in ongoing education to enhance skills is vital. The role requires physical stamina, including standing for extended periods and performing various movements to provide care. Sensory abilities such as communication, vision, and hearing are necessary to monitor client health.
Manual dexterity and coordination are important, as is the capacity to work in a high-pressure environment. Regular attendance is crucial to meet the needs of clients and the facility.
Compliance with all facility policies and standards of excellence is expected while fulfilling responsibilities.
