Role of the Financial Advocate
The Financial Advocate is tasked with addressing billing and insurance inquiries for all acute care facilities, surgical centers, and clinics.

This role involves reviewing patient financial information and communicating with patients or responsible parties regarding third-party reimbursement coverage and patient financial obligations for healthcare services.

The Counselor will conduct a comprehensive social and financial assessment, referring patients without insurance or those eligible for financial assistance to appropriate medical eligibility agencies for potential support through federal, state, or local healthcare programs.

Additionally, the role includes collecting payments or establishing payment plans prior to service delivery, during admission, or throughout the discharge process.

Qualifications
Education:
High School diploma or GED is required.

Experience:
A minimum of 3 years in registration, insurance verification, financial counseling, or patient accounting is required, along with at least 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting.

Licensure/Certification:
Notary Public Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Essential Skills/Requirements:
  • Possess traits of patience, empathy, and compassion. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Ability to articulate clearly and maintain a pleasant telephone demeanor. Capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment. Team-oriented with a willingness to collaborate. Proficient in balancing and prioritizing multiple tasks. Ability to work under pressure and engage with various individuals across different roles. Adaptable to change. Effective listening skills. Competent in navigating computer systems while on the phone. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of billing and finance processes, registration, insurance verification, managed care, and government payors. Basic accounting knowledge is required. Familiarity with medical terminology and claims processing is beneficial. Proven customer service problem-solving and relationship-building skills. Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute. Strong analytical skills. Expected to achieve proficiency in Epic and legacy practice management systems with successful completion of all related competencies. Willingness to travel to multiple facilities as necessary.
Preferred Skills/Requirements:
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding charity care, agency assistance, and debt collection is preferred. Experience with EPIC software is advantageous.
