Group Fitness Instructor Role at Bloomington-Normal YMCA

This position plays a vital role in supporting the mission of the YMCA, a well-established non-profit organization committed to improving community health through youth development, wellness, and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Wellness Director, the Group Fitness Instructor is tasked with leading and managing group fitness sessions in a secure, effective, and motivating environment for participants of varying fitness levels, adhering to YMCA standards.

Position Requirements:

  • Foster a sense of community among group fitness participants.
  • Adapt classes as necessary to accommodate various health, ability, and cultural needs.
  • Lead engaging, enjoyable, safe, and informative group sessions aligned with YMCA program objectives.
  • Recognize and respond to the diverse health needs of YMCA members.
  • Maintain current knowledge of wellness trends to provide effective guidance and support to members.
  • Accurately document information in accordance with YMCA procedures.
  • Adhere to YMCA policies, respond to emergencies promptly, and embody the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Promote a culture that values diversity and inclusion.
  • Identify and celebrate the achievements of members and program participants.
  • Perform additional duties as required by departmental needs.

Work Environment:

  • Engage in activities involving walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Experience significant noise levels and varying light/color conditions.
  • Be exposed to changing visual stimuli.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Hold a nationally recognized certification such as AFAA, ACE, ACSM, ASFA, or MOSSA.
  • Preferably possess one year of relevant work experience.
  • Capable of organizing, leading, and participating in group fitness programs.
  • Easily connect and communicate with diverse groups.
  • Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED (provided by the YMCA within 30 days of hiring).
  • Completion of DCFS Mandated Reporter Training certification (to be obtained within 30 days of hiring).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in both written and spoken Spanish.
  • At least one year of group fitness instruction experience.
  • Hold a YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification.
