Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy (BHHC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to land conservation, is in search of a full-time Chief Executive Officer.
With a legacy spanning over five decades, BHHC safeguards more than 1500 acres across 60 preserves, ensuring the protection of vital ecosystems for future generations.
Our organization thrives on the commitment of five professional staff members and approximately 120 dedicated volunteers, fostering community involvement through outreach, education, and raising awareness about environmental issues.
The Chief Executive Officer will serve as the principal representative for BHHC, engaging with local and regional partners to uphold our standards of excellence in collaborative land conservation.
This role involves close collaboration with the Board of Directors to execute the Strategic Plan within our newly expanded service area, enhancing the organization's sustainability and the safeguarding of key conservation sites.
Key Responsibilities:Conservation & Community Engagement:
Act as the public face of the Conservancy: engage in public speaking; cultivate collaborative relationships with municipalities, foundations, funders, and other organizations; represent BHHC in meetings with fellow conservancies; connect with environmental, technical, and scientific partners.
Lead initiatives in land acquisition, stewardship, education, and outreach.Facilitate the stewardship of BHHC's properties by staff and volunteers to ensure ecological integrity and visitor safety.
Stay informed about land conservancy legislation and current environmental issues.
Write and manage grants that align with strategic objectives and the organization's mission.
Assist the Board of Directors in developing and implementing long-term goals in accordance with the Strategic Plan, ensuring the organization operates consistently with its mission and financial resources.
Coordinate with the Board President to establish meeting agendas; attend Board and select Committee meetings (e.g., Finance, Stewardship, and Governance).
Develop an annual revenue plan and budget in collaboration with staff, the Finance Committee, and the Board.Generate innovative fundraising ideas for new revenue streams.
Oversee the implementation of a fundraising strategy with the Donor Engagement Specialist, Board Treasurer, and others.
Leadership and Management:
Direct office operations while maintaining a strong culture of collaboration, mentorship, and community.
Ensure compliance with policies and procedures established by the Board.
Work with staff to plan, communicate, and manage significant events and educational programs. Utilize current and emerging software to enhance digital marketing strategies.
Staff Supervision and Human Resources:
Lead staff meetings; oversee and coordinate staff activities; evaluate workforce performance; manage payroll and employment decisions.
Oversee annual audits and financial reviews, ensuring compliance with all organizational tax obligations. Monitor financial transactions and coordinate with the Treasurer; supervise bookkeeping activities to ensure adherence to financial policies.
In collaboration with the Board, identify and manage risks related to properties, finances, cybersecurity, and legal matters.
Propose future initiatives and lead efforts for organizational accreditation.Qualifications:
Commitment to the mission of the conservancy
Prior experience in leadership roles within environmental nonprofits
Professional, collegial, resourceful, and collaborative demeanor
Strong leadership skills; experience in project management and budget planning; excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities
Flexibility to accommodate a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends
Ability to work in a standard office environment and navigate diverse terrains as necessary.
Ideal Candidate:
At least 5 years of relevant leadership experience in the nonprofit sector with a focus on land conservation.
Able to provide innovative leadership to grow the organization while maintaining its current success.
Experience with effective fundraising strategies.
Proven ability to develop successful partnerships.
Experience collaborating with a Board of Directors.
Familiarity with current technology trends.
