CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER POSITION SUMMARY: The Chief Medical Officer is required to be a licensed Physician who will provide strategic guidance, leadership, and oversight of all facets of medical care within correctional facilities. This role encompasses the authorization of services, consultation to clinical operations, and overall clinical direction.
The CMO is responsible for upholding the clinical quality and integrity of patient care, which includes overseeing utilization and quality management, credentialing, and the development of best practice guidelines (including nursing protocols).
The Chief Medical Officer collaborates with facilities to create site-specific protocols, interprets policies, and spearheads initiatives related to medical services and nursing care. This position entails direct clinical responsibilities and supervision of physicians and mid-level providers. The CMO also engages in staff and community education initiatives.
CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a current unrestricted medical license in the State of Michigan. Board Certification is mandatory. A valid unrestricted DEA License and Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification are required. A master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Public Health (MPH), Healthcare Administration (MHCA), or a related field is preferred.
Knowledge of managed healthcare systems, medical quality assurance, quality improvement, and risk management is essential. Experience in launching and managing innovative medical programs, including the development, execution, and evaluation of program audits, is required.
Experience collaborating with IT staff to implement and manage advanced practice management and/or EHR software packages is necessary. Candidates must demonstrate leadership capabilities, team management, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Internet usage, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is expected. The ideal candidate will be a supportive team member who exemplifies teamwork and collaboration.
CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Consult with community medical providers to address service delivery issues. Supervise clinical services provided by professional and paraprofessional staff. Ensure availability of on-call services. Annually review and endorse clinical protocols, policies, procedures, and medical disaster plans. Manage referrals to external healthcare facilities, ensuring appropriateness, quality, and continuity of care.
Sponsor Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in compliance with state regulations for correctional facilities. Serve as a resource for all staff Physicians and relevant clinical personnel at the facility. Assist in the screening, interviewing, credential evaluation, and hiring of healthcare providers. Participate in in-service training sessions. Represent the healthcare program in discussions with local civic groups or visiting officials as needed. Attend medical, clinical, and other meetings as required. Complete sick call, chronic care, and infirmary care as necessary. Document all patient encounters in medical records, ensuring all documentation is timely, legible, and signed. Ensure all verbal or telephone orders are countersigned as mandated. Adhere to the approved formulary for therapeutic regimens before utilizing non-formulary procedures. Review all non-formulary requests to ensure documentation of relevant observations and treatment conclusions. Utilize available in-house resources for treatment and resolution of identified issues before seeking off-site referrals. Provide emergency treatment on-site and respond appropriately in urgent or emergency situations. Strive to redefine industry benchmarks through core values, strong partnerships, effective clinical practices, and innovative healthcare strategies. Ensure competence in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED use. Follow evidence-based standards of medical care by adhering to existing policies and procedures.
