Blue Heron Headwaters Conservancy (BHHC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental preservation, is looking for a full-time Chief Executive Officer. This esteemed organization has been active for over five decades, safeguarding more than 1500 acres across 60 preserves within the headwaters of four watersheds, ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations. With a committed team of five professionals and around 120 passionate volunteers, we strive to enhance community involvement through outreach, education, and raising awareness about ecological issues.

The Chief Executive Officer will collaborate closely with BHHC's Board of Directors to execute the Board's Strategic Plan in our newly expanded service area, advancing the organization's sustainability and the conservation of priority sites. The CEO will guide BHHC in strategic planning, program development, operational management, and fostering relationships with key funding sources. Working in tandem with the current team focused on donor engagement, communications, database management, and event planning, the CEO will oversee daily operations and provide strategic direction aligned with organizational goals. Our ideal candidate will be an innovative thinker, exceptionally organized, and a collaborative leader who passionately advocates for our conservation, stewardship, education, and outreach initiatives. Compensation will be competitive, reflecting experience and expertise.

Title: Chief Executive Officer

Reports to: Board of Directors

Key Responsibilities include:

Conservation & Community:

  • Serve as the public face of the Conservancy: engage in public speaking, cultivate collaborative relationships with municipalities, foundations, funders, and other organizations; represent BHHC in meetings with peer organizations; connect BHHC with environmental, technical, and scientific partners.
  • Champion our mission of land acquisition, stewardship, education, and outreach.
  • Facilitate staff and volunteer stewardship of BHHC's properties to ensure ecological integrity and visitor safety.
  • Stay informed about land conservancy legislation and current environmental issues.
  • Write and manage grants that align with strategic objectives and the organization's mission.
  • Assist the Board of Directors in developing and implementing long-term goals consistent with the Strategic Plan and ensure the organization is managed in alignment with its mission and financial resources.
  • Coordinate with the Board President to establish meeting agendas; attend Board and select Committee meetings.
  • Develop an annual revenue plan and budget in collaboration with staff and the Finance Committee.
  • Generate innovative fundraising ideas for new revenue streams.
  • Prepare and oversee the implementation of a fundraising strategy with the Donor Engagement Specialist and Board Treasurer.

Leadership and Management:

  • Oversee office operations while fostering a culture of cooperation, mentorship, and community.
  • Ensure compliance with Board-established policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with staff to plan, communicate, and manage major events and educational programs, utilizing current and emerging software for digital marketing strategies.
  • Supervise staff and Human Resources: lead staff meetings, oversee staff actions, evaluate workforce performance, and manage payroll and employment decisions.
  • Oversee annual audits and financial reviews, managing all organizational tax obligations and ensuring compliance with financial policies.
  • In partnership with the Board, identify and manage risks related to properties, finances, cybersecurity, and legal matters.
  • Propose future initiatives and lead the organization's accreditation efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of the Conservancy.
  • Prior experience in leadership roles within environmental nonprofits.
  • Professional, collegial, resourceful, and collaborative demeanor.
  • Strong leadership abilities; experience in project management and budget planning; excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility to accommodate a varied work schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment and navigate diverse terrains as necessary.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • At least 5 years of relevant leadership experience in the nonprofit sector with a focus on land conservation.
  • Able to provide innovative leadership to expand the organization while maintaining its current success.
  • Proven experience in successful fundraising strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective partnerships.
  • Experience collaborating with a Board of Directors.
  • Familiarity with current technology and software.
