Position Overview:
A Financial Counselor acts as the intermediary between patients and the healthcare practice, facilitating payment processes, providing assistance, monitoring patient accounts, and enhancing communication regarding financial obligations.
The Financial Counselor is responsible for ensuring that patients' insurance benefits are accurately reflected in the electronic medical records (EMR) and billing systems, while also confirming that the services provided align with insurance coverage criteria.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate with insurance providers on pre-certification and prior authorization, including peer-to-peer discussions and appeals, while collaborating with the provider or pharmacy team as necessary.
3. Analyze treatment plans to verify active insurance coverage and communicate any discrepancies to the provider promptly.
4. Generate service estimates based on new treatment orders and discuss insurance benefits and patient obligations with the patient.
6. Review outstanding patient balances and establish appropriate payment arrangements.
7. Explain required forms and documentation, including waivers, treatment estimates, payment plans, and assistance applications.
8. Maintain open communication with providers, nursing staff, and colleagues throughout the workday via Teams, phone, email, and in-person discussions regarding financial responsibilities.
9. Collaborate with external entities to ensure timely completion of necessary forms and documentation.
10. Assist patients in completing applications for financial aid and other grant-funded programs to secure funding for treatment and services.
11. Understand patient assistance programs and grant processes to facilitate proper application and coordination with the financial aid counseling team.
12. Comply with all relevant Federal and State regulations regarding patient care, rights, billing, and collections.
Maintain a tidy work environment and ensure all company equipment is in safe working order.
Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including those related to the revenue cycle.
Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Further education or relevant certifications are a plus.
Experience:
A minimum of two years of experience in the healthcare sector, ideally in a clinical or administrative setting.
Experience in healthcare customer service, medical terminology, insurance verification, and pre-certification processes is essential.
Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
Proficient understanding of insurance requirements, including medical terminology, ICD9, ICD10, and CPT codes.
Experience in cash handling and monetary collections is required.
Ability to calculate patient responsibilities and insurance co-pays/coinsurance.

Self-Management:
Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and handle stress. Self-motivated with the capability to work independently and remotely as needed.
Must thrive in a fast-paced, multi-site environment and effectively manage competing priorities.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
Ability to navigate multiple applications and screens to complete job functions efficiently.

Standard Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Occasional overtime and weekend shifts may be required based on operational needs.
