Position Overview:

The Senior Communications Manager will spearhead initiatives to enhance GMF's presence and recognition within the US media landscape. This role involves leveraging GMF's expertise, events, and activities to create impactful communication opportunities that amplify the organization's overall influence.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Establish and nurture relationships with influential journalists covering foreign policy and related topics.
  2. Devise, develop, and execute innovative strategies to attract media attention for GMF's experts and initiatives.
  3. Provide guidance to GMF leadership and staff on effective media engagement practices, including the formulation of op-eds to maximize media relevance.
  4. Collaborate with the Europe-based Senior Press Officer to create and implement an op-ed strategy for placement in US publications.
  5. Identify and capitalize on opportunities for media coverage surrounding events and publications, ensuring alignment with GMF's branding and objectives.
  6. Draft press releases and generate engaging content for GMF's digital platforms.
  7. Manage media inquiries, coordinate interviews and press briefings, and oversee media logistics during events.
  8. Engage top-tier journalists as moderators for events and facilitate their involvement with GMF.
  9. Develop a toolkit with the Senior Press Officer for assessing and reporting GMF's media impact.
  10. Maintain an updated database of media contacts and identify opportunities to expand GMF's outreach.
  11. Lead communications efforts related to the DC office's activities in collaboration with the Communications Managing Director.
  12. Oversee the US communications team and assume leadership of the GMF Communications team during the Managing Director's absence.

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of the American media landscape with established connections among Washington-based foreign policy journalists; familiarity with European media is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated success in media placements and a comprehensive understanding of media operations.
  • Ability to coordinate communications across different time zones effectively.
  • Exceptional writing skills, both academically and journalistically.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; proficiency in German or French is a plus.
  • Strong interest in international relations, particularly in European and American foreign policy.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in communications or media relations.
