Job Responsibilities
The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Taxation is in search of skilled Auditors for their Revenue Analysis and Planning Unit. In this role, you will conduct independent and intricate desk tax audits on both business entities and individuals, applying relevant auditing standards and methodologies to ensure adherence to Virginia's tax regulations and mitigate the tax gap for the state.
As a Tax Compliance Auditor, your key responsibilities will include:
- Independently executing and effectively concluding complex desk audits.
- Providing timely and professional responses to inquiries from taxpayers and other stakeholders.
- Conducting research and analysis for assigned tax matters and projects.
- Preparing and submitting comprehensive, accurate, and timely reports.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
Location and Work Environment
This position is based in the Central Office in Richmond, Virginia, and is eligible for a hybrid telework arrangement following successful training.
Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience, with a maximum of $57,000. As part of the Virginia Tax team, you will enjoy a range of benefits, including:

Minimum Qualifications
- Proficient understanding of Virginia and federal tax laws, forms, schedules, and filing processes.
- Experience in gathering information from multiple sources to arrive at accurate conclusions.
- Background in analyzing or auditing tax or financial records to determine correct tax liabilities.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, suitable for interaction with taxpayers, industry groups, and other state agencies.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team to complete assigned tasks.
- Proficiency in using Windows-based computers and the Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional Considerations
- Familiarity with accounting and auditing terminology, techniques, and principles.
- Experience in prioritizing tasks and managing multiple responsibilities.
- Professional experience in preparing and/or reviewing individual income tax returns.
