Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Human Resource Management is seeking qualified Auditors for their Revenue Analysis and Planning Unit.

As an Auditor, you will execute independent and intricate desk tax audits on business entities and individuals, applying relevant auditing standards and procedures to ensure adherence to Virginia's tax regulations and mitigate the tax gap for the Commonwealth.

Your role will involve collaboration within the Office of Compliance to uphold the Agency's culture, values, and vision.

As an External Auditor, your responsibilities will include:

  • Independently conducting and effectively concluding complex desk audits.
  • Providing timely and professional responses to taxpayers and other stakeholders.


  • Conducting research and analysis for assigned tax matters and projects.
  • Preparing and submitting comprehensive, accurate, and timely reports.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule once fully trained.

The anticipated hiring salary is commensurate with experience, up to $57,000.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Virginia and federal tax laws, forms, schedules, and filing procedures.
  • Experience in gathering information from various sources to reach accurate conclusions.
  • Experience in analyzing or auditing tax or financial records to determine proper tax liabilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to engage with taxpayers, industry groups, other state agencies, and legislators.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to complete assigned tasks.
  • Proficiency in using a Windows-based computer and Microsoft Office Suite.

Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of accounting and audit terminology, techniques, and formal accounting theory.
  • Experience in prioritizing duties and managing multiple tasks.
  • Professional experience in preparing and/or reviewing individual income tax returns.
