Job Overview

Cumberland County Government is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Correctional Officer to join our team. As a key member of our correctional facility, you will be responsible for maintaining the safety and security of inmates, staff, and visitors.

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary range of $25.62/hr - $28.44/hr, depending on experience, plus shift differentials, overtime pay, and education stipends. Our comprehensive benefits package includes health insurance with no deductible, an educational assistance program, and Maine State Retirement with social security contributions.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain the security and safety of the correctional facility, inmates, and staff.
  • Conduct regular rounds to ensure adherence to regulations and procedures.
  • Monitor inmates' activities and enforce disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Search inmates and their living quarters for contraband or other prohibited items.
  • Escort inmates to court hearings, medical appointments, and other destinations.
  • Document inmate behavior and record any violations.
  • Issue warnings and sanctions as required.
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation services when needed.
  • Supervise and monitor inmate work activities.
  • Operate and maintain security control systems.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Hold a valid driver's license.
  • Pass a physical exam, including a drug screen.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Pass a criminal and work history background check.
  • Work effectively in a stressful environment.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Make sound decisions quickly and accurately.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to work with inmates in a firm yet compassionate manner.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Use chemical agents and other physical altercation deterrents as needed.
