Salary & Benefits

We offer an attractive compensation package, with a starting hourly rate of $26.17 (evening shift) to $28.44, depending on experience. Additional stipends and incentives are available for shifts worked beyond 56 hours per week, including $0.55/hour for 3pm-11pm shifts, $0.85/hour for 11pm-7am shifts, and a weekend shift differential of $0.50/hour. Education stipends are also offered for Associate's and Bachelor's degrees. Certified corrections officers may be eligible for lateral credit and a $6,000 sign-on bonus.

Job Description

As a Corrections Officer at Cumberland County Government, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of correctional facilities, inmates, and staff. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining facility security and conducting regular rounds to ensure adherence to regulations and procedures;
  • Monitoring inmate activities, enforcing disciplinary actions, and searching living quarters;
  • Escorting inmates to court hearings, medical appointments, and other destinations;
  • Documenting inmate behavior and issuing disciplinary warnings and sanctions;
  • Providing crisis intervention and de-escalation services, supervising work activities, and operating security control systems;
  • Assisting visitors and preparing reports and documents related to facility operations.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years old, and hold a valid driver's license. You must also pass a physical exam, including a drug screen, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Additionally, you should be able to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and maintain a professional demeanor in stressful environments.
