Job Overview

Cumberland County Government is seeking a dedicated and passionate Corrections Officer to join our team. As a Corrections Officer, you will play a vital role in maintaining the safety, security, and supervision of inmates within the Cumberland County Jail.

About the Role

You will be responsible for monitoring and enforcing regulations, managing inmate behavior, and providing guidance and support. If you are committed to justice and rehabilitation, this is an exciting opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of those you serve.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain the security and safety of the correctional facility, inmates, and staff;
  • Conduct regular rounds to ensure adherence to regulations and procedures;
  • Monitor inmates' activities and enforce disciplinary actions;
  • Search inmates and their living quarters;
  • Escort inmates to court hearings, medical appointments, and other destinations;
  • Document inmate behavior and record violations;
  • Issue warnings and sanctions as necessary;
  • Respond to inmate requests and grievances;
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation services;
  • Supervise and monitor inmate work activities;
  • Operate and maintain security control systems;
  • Assist visitors and prepare reports as required.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required;
  • Must be at least 18 years old;
  • A valid driver's license is necessary;
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays;
  • Pass a physical exam and background check;
  • Be able to stand and walk for extended periods;
  • Have basic computer skills;
  • Knowledge of law enforcement procedures is beneficial;
  • Able to work with inmates in a firm yet compassionate manner;
  • Ability to use chemical agents and other deterrents if necessary.
Benefits

Cumberland County Government offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, educational assistance, and Maine State Retirement with social security contributions. Starting salary is $25.62-$28.44 per hour, depending on experience, with opportunities for advancement and additional stipends.
