Position Overview

Boston University (BU) is in search of a dynamic and strategic Vice President of School Advancement to spearhead and enhance fundraising and alumni engagement efforts across a distinguished portfolio of five esteemed schools and colleges. This role is pivotal in strengthening advancement capabilities in alignment with the university's strategic objectives as it embarks on its next comprehensive fundraising campaign.

In collaboration with the Associate Vice President for School Development, the Vice President will lead a dedicated team of 21 professionals in development and alumni relations, including five direct reports responsible for fundraising initiatives within the College of Engineering, Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, Questrom School of Business, School of Law, and Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. The successful candidate will foster strong partnerships and collaborative efforts among various schools, regional teams, and Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) staff, promoting a cohesive and strategic approach that leverages the expertise and resources available across the institution.

The impact of DAR on the university's mission is evident through significant growth in fundraising and alumni engagement, with the portfolio collectively generating approximately $35-40 million annually. Each school's strategic plan presents opportunities for innovative approaches to identifying philanthropic prospects, engaging influential volunteers, and cultivating meaningful contributions.

The Vice President will build upon a solid foundation to engage leaders from assigned schools and colleges in strategically aligned development efforts, particularly as the university transitions to new leadership. Founded in 1839, Boston University has evolved into one of the largest nonprofit universities in the nation, known for its commitment to impact and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a portfolio of schools and colleges, ensuring effective fundraising strategies are implemented.
  • Oversee the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of high-level prospects to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to align fundraising efforts with the university's strategic initiatives.
  • Drive performance metrics and track progress toward fundraising objectives in partnership with unit leaders.
  • Promote a professional environment that values diversity, teamwork, and individual success.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of fourteen years of experience in development and alumni engagement, with a focus on academic fundraising.
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising, including management of major and principal gift prospects.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to build collaborative relationships across various departments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to fundraising.
