Job Summary:

The University of Tennessee seeks a highly skilled Laboratory Animal Assistant 2 to support a centralized laboratory animal resource program in an academic health science center campus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director of the Animal Facility to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and maintain accurate records of examinations and medical history.
  • Work with investigators and research staff to provide specialized husbandry practices and services for various research projects.
  • Coordinate the delivery of unique or specialized husbandry practices or services, including feeding, watering, and providing specialized care for animals under standard and specialized housing conditions.
  • Sanitize cages, pens, animal quarters, and equipment, and perform minor repairs.
  • Administer medications and/or treatments under the direction of the Director and/or researchers.
  • Assist researchers with pre and post-procedure examinations, including recording vitals and standard medical history question responses.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment necessary for daily operation and maintenance of the work area and animal facility.
  • Receive and monitor newly arrived animals for a period of initial physiologic, psychologic, and nutritional stabilization.
  • Ensure that newly arrived animals are assigned to appropriate housing location, caging, and identified correctly after their initial quarantine period.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of relevant experience, or Associate's Degree in lieu of experience, or Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level and one (1) year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
  • Ability to create and maintain extensive records.
  • Experience with the evaluation of health status of animals.
  • Knowledge of specialized cages used for animal research.
  • Ability to use hands in a repetitive motion.
  • Experience with a microisolator procedure for animal husbandry.
  • Experience with mixing chemicals to produce sterilized water.
