Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental Sanitarian III to join our team at the Municipality of Anchorage, AK. As a key member of our Environmental Health Department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of our community by enforcing regulations and conducting inspections of food establishments, hotels, and other public facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of food establishments, hotels, and other public facilities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Enforce regulations and take enforcement action as necessary, including issuing notices of violation and citations
  • Investigate complaints about possible foodborne illness and respond to complaints regarding food establishments, pools, and spas
  • Provide technical assistance and public health education to permit holders, their employees, and the public
  • Conduct plan reviews for food facility establishments and remodeling plans, advising owners of needed changes and suggesting alternatives when necessary
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related discipline
  • Two years of experience in environmental science, epidemiology, investigation of foodborne illness, public health sanitation inspections, or a related field, with one year as an Environmental Sanitarian II with the Municipality of Anchorage or equivalent
  • Valid State of Alaska driver's license with satisfactory driving record at time of hire
  • Municipality of Anchorage Certification as a Designated Peace Officer within six months of hire
  • Certified Pool/Spa Operator Certification or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification within six months of hire
  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Inspection Officer Certification within six months of hire
  • State of Alaska Pesticide Applicator certification within six months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Sanitarian (RS) through National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) or a recognized equivalent
