Job Summary

The Municipality of Anchorage, AK is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Sanitarian III to join our team. As a key member of our Environmental Health Department, you will be responsible for ensuring the health and safety of our community by enforcing regulations and standards related to environmental health.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of public facilities, including food establishments, hotels/motels, and swimming pools, to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Review permit applications and plans to ensure they meet regulatory requirements.
  • Investigate complaints and take enforcement action as necessary, including issuing notices of violation and citations.
  • Provide technical assistance and public health education to permit holders, their employees, and the public.
  • Conduct plan reviews for food facility establishments and remodeling plans, advising owners of needed changes and suggesting alternatives.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related discipline.
  • Two years of experience in environmental science, epidemiology, investigation of food borne illness, public health sanitation inspections, or a related field, with one year as an Environmental Sanitarian II.
  • Valid State of Alaska driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Municipality of Anchorage Certification as a Designated Peace Officer within six months of hire.
  • Certified Pool/Spa Operator Certification or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification within six months of hire.
  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Inspection Officer Certification within six months of hire.
  • State of Alaska Pesticide Applicator certification within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Registered Sanitarian (RS) through the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) or a recognized equivalent.
