Job Overview

Position Summary:

The City of Copperas Cove is seeking a dedicated individual to assist in the maintenance operations of our vehicle fleet. This role involves performing preventive maintenance and repairs on various vehicles within the Fleet Department.


Supervision:

This position operates under the general guidance of the Fleet Supervisor.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Implement and assess preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either directly or through external vendors.
  2. Utilize a range of diagnostic tools and hand, electric, and air-driven equipment.
  3. Conduct testing, servicing, and repairs on vehicles and mechanical systems.
  4. Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary components as part of repair and maintenance tasks.
  5. Repair various systems including brakes, engines, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, and transmission.
  6. Perform metal cutting, welding, and body repairs as needed.
  7. Change tires and evaluate the condition of mechanical equipment and vehicles, scheduling repairs as necessary.
  8. Conduct analyses and inspections to determine the most cost-effective maintenance, repair, or replacement options.
  9. Adhere to shop procedures and maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs.
  10. Procure equipment, parts, and supplies essential for vehicle maintenance.
  11. Provide emergency assistance for disabled equipment when required.
  12. Fulfill additional duties as needed to ensure effective maintenance operations.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent is required; technical school training is preferred. A minimum of two years of experience in automotive and truck mechanics is ideal.

Experience in all facets of automotive and truck repair, including rebuilds and heavy equipment repair, is essential.

A valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within nine months of employment is required.

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Automotive or Heavy-Duty truck is mandatory or must be obtained within one year of hire.


Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency in shop mathematics and the ability to read schematics are necessary.

Strong troubleshooting skills for a wide range of heavy and automotive equipment components are essential.

Ability to select and use various diagnostic tools and equipment effectively.

Experience with hand and power tools, as well as technical manuals and specifications, is required.

Welding skills (arc, MIG, gas) and knowledge of safety regulations are important.

Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and other departments.

Capability to interpret manuals and technical documents is necessary.


Physical Requirements:

This role requires frequent use of hands for handling tools and equipment, occasional climbing, and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 100 pounds.


Work Environment:

Employees will work near moving mechanical parts and in various weather conditions. Exposure to noise, fumes, and potential hazards is expected.
