Position Summary:
The City of Copperas Cove is seeking a dedicated individual to support the maintenance operations by performing preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles within the Fleet Department.
Supervision:
This role operates under the general guidance of the Fleet Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and assess preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally or through external vendors.
- Utilize various diagnostic tools and a range of hand, electric, and air-powered tools.
- Conduct tests, service, and repair vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary components during repair and maintenance tasks.
- Repair systems including brakes, engines, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, and axle assemblies.
- Perform metal cutting, welding, and body repair as needed.
- Change tires and evaluate the condition of mechanical equipment and vehicles, scheduling repairs as necessary.
- Conduct analyses and inspections to determine the most cost-effective maintenance, repair, or replacement strategies.
- Adhere to shop procedures and data for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance and repair.
- Procure equipment, parts, and supplies for maintenance tasks.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to shop equipment.
- Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment when required.
- Fulfill other essential duties as necessary to ensure effective maintenance operations.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required; technical school education is preferred. A minimum of two years of experience as an automotive and truck mechanic is preferred.
Experience in all facets of automotive and truck repair, including rebuilds and heavy equipment repair, is essential.
A valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within nine months of employment is required.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Automotive or Heavy-Duty truck is required or must be obtained within one year of hire.
Special Requirements:
Attendance at required training sessions to maintain certifications is mandatory. The ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative is crucial.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency in shop mathematics and the ability to read schematics are necessary.
Skills in troubleshooting and performing comprehensive repairs on various heavy and automotive equipment components are essential.
Ability to identify, select, and utilize various testing, measurement, and diagnostic tools effectively.
Competence in using hand and power tools, as well as technical manuals and specifications, is required.
Welding skills (arc, MIG, and gas) and knowledge of safety regulations are important.
Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with coworkers and other departments are necessary.
Ability to read and interpret manuals and technical bulletins is essential.
Work Environment:
The work environment may include exposure to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and moderate noise levels. Safety precautions must be observed to mitigate risks associated with exhaust fumes, chemical solvents, and electrical hazards.
Physical Demands:
Employees must be able to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
