The Substance Abuse Counselor will deliver therapeutic interventions, counseling, and educational support focused on harm reduction for individuals dealing with addiction at the Meharry Addiction Clinic. Utilizing evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, the counselor will operate within a structured clinical environment that encompasses assessment, treatment planning, referral services, and discharge strategies. Alongside therapeutic duties, the counselor will engage in case management to assist clients in meeting their fundamental needs and connecting them to advanced care options when necessary. Accurate documentation of client progress will be maintained in the electronic health records system to facilitate billing for services rendered to underserved populations. This role is under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and may include mentorship towards obtaining advanced professional credentials from a licensed practitioner in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one counseling for substance use and relapse prevention, ensuring thorough documentation in the Electronic Health Records.
  • Lead group sessions and educational workshops for clinic participants, employing techniques such as Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
  • Foster a collaborative service delivery model by integrating activities across various programs and initiatives.
  • Offer case management support to clients and facilitate connections with external service providers as required.
  • Input client data and service records into the TN-WITS platform for designated individuals.
  • Establish new partnerships and resources with external service providers.
  • Adhere to all reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement quality assurance measures for client and site records.
  • Engage in staff meetings, training sessions, and supervisory activities.
  • Perform additional related tasks as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
  • Experience working with underserved and marginalized communities, demonstrating cultural competence.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the core competencies required for substance abuse treatment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written, verbal, and communication skills.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • A Master's degree in social work or a related field, or equivalent experience as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselor II (LADAC) is required.
  • A minimum of three years of clinical experience is preferred and may be considered in lieu of a degree.
