The Substance Abuse Counselor will deliver comprehensive counseling services and educational programs focused on harm reduction for individuals struggling with addiction. Utilizing evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, the counselor will engage in a clinical framework that encompasses assessment, treatment planning, referrals, and discharge strategies. In addition to therapeutic services, the counselor will also offer case management to assist clients in meeting their fundamental needs and connecting them to advanced care when necessary. Accurate documentation of client progress will be maintained in the electronic health records system to facilitate billing for services rendered to underserved populations. This role operates under the supervision of a Clinical Supervisor and may involve mentorship towards obtaining advanced professional credentials.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct individual counseling sessions focused on substance abuse and relapse prevention, ensuring thorough documentation in the electronic health records.
- Lead group interventions and educational sessions for clinic participants, employing Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and harm reduction techniques.
- Foster a collaborative service delivery model by integrating activities across various programs and initiatives.
- Provide case management support to clients and facilitate connections with external service providers as needed.
- Input client data and service records into the designated tracking system for appropriate individuals.
- Establish new partnerships and resources with external service organizations.
- Adhere to all reporting and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with team members to develop and implement quality assurance processes for client records.
- Engage in team meetings, training sessions, and supervision activities.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
- Experience working with underserved populations, demonstrating cultural competence.
- Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
- Thorough understanding of core competencies in substance abuse treatment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong written, verbal, and communication skills.
- A Master's degree in social work or a related field, or equivalent experience as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselor II (LADAC) is required.
- A minimum of three years of clinical experience is preferred and may be considered in lieu of formal education.
