Job Overview

Role Purpose:

The Field Training Officer (FTO) plays a crucial role in guiding new Special Officers as they transition from training to real-world responsibilities. Under the supervision of a Senior Special Officer, the FTO is tasked with clearly outlining job expectations and ensuring that all officers are informed about the latest policies and procedures relevant to their roles. The FTO also exemplifies the core values of NYC Health + Hospitals, serving as a mentor and role model for new recruits.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Implement an on-the-job training program for new Special Officers, ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures.
2. Provide ongoing coaching and assessment of new officers throughout their training period.
3. Familiarize new Special Officers with their job functions while emphasizing the importance of confidentiality and discretion.
4. Support Special Officers in mastering their tasks, fostering independence and competence.
5. Reinforce de-escalation and conflict resolution strategies to prepare officers for real-life scenarios.
6. Review and clarify site-specific policies applicable to the healthcare environment.
7. Maintain detailed training records for each officer, documenting their progress throughout the training phases.
8. Complete competency evaluations and provide written summaries for personnel records, certifying readiness for independent work.
9. Monitor the effective use of communication tools and protocols among new officers.
10. Alert leadership regarding any performance issues that arise during training.
11. Assist in the development and updating of training manuals for incoming Special Officers.
12. Participate in training sessions to ensure familiarity with the Hospital Police Academy curriculum.
13. Conduct in-service training for current Special Officers to introduce new policies and procedures.
14. Collaborate with the Hospital Police Academy for annual training initiatives as needed.
15. Perform additional duties as assigned, including regular responsibilities of a Special Officer.

Qualifications:
1. Must be a permanent Special Officer with a minimum of two years of experience.
2. No recent or pending disciplinary actions.
3. Valid New York State Peace Officer certification.
4. Valid New York State Driver's license.
5. Completion of the Field Training Officer training program prior to assignment.
