Visual Communication Specialist

As a key member of our media team, the Visual Communication Specialist plays a vital role in assisting faculty who teach online and hybrid courses. This position focuses on creating visually compelling graphics that effectively communicate course content and enrich the online learning environment. The specialist will utilize Adobe Creative Cloud to develop a variety of media assets, including backgrounds, transitions, thumbnails, and text components.
Collaborating closely with instructional designers, the media team produces essential media as part of the overall course design. This media may include educational videos or graphic elements for interactive components. Under the guidance of the Associate Director of Media Production, the specialist will translate complex concepts into engaging visuals.
This role emphasizes collaboration, requiring the specialist to work effectively with subject matter experts across diverse disciplines, instructional designers with pedagogical expertise, and fellow media specialists.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong artistic sensibility to create materials that resonate with a college student audience while adhering to the branding standards of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Responsibilities may include enhancing presentations, creating templates in Google Slides, and developing graphics for websites or social media channels, all while ensuring compliance with web accessibility and design standards.
This position may require both on-campus and remote work based on operational needs, with telework options available at the discretion of the supervisor. The nature of this role may evolve based on the strategic direction of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design or a related field Proficient in multimedia content integration Expertise in Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator) Experience collaborating with media specialists on graphic assets for motion graphics Familiarity with Learning Management Systems, preferably Canvas Experience working with instructional designers to create graphics for interactive elements, ideally using H5P and Harmonize Proficient in Google Suite, Smartsheet, or similar collaboration tools Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills Professional demeanor and adherence to confidentiality Proven ability to collaborate effectively on team projects Dependability, creativity, and reliability Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment Capacity to work independently and make informed decisions Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in higher education and/or instructional media is preferred. Physical and Cognitive Requirements:
Essential physical functions include climbing, walking, sitting, lifting, and repetitive motion. Essential cognitive functions encompass memory, reasoning, analyzing, hearing, logic, reading, written communication, and verbal communication.
