The Communication Specialist operates at a novice to intermediate level within a healthcare environment, focusing on the assessment and treatment of patients with speech and language challenges.

This role involves conducting evaluations and implementing therapeutic strategies for a diverse patient demographic. The Communication Specialist contributes to team objectives by engaging in departmental tasks, problem-solving, and delivering interventions.

The Communication Specialist may mentor other healthcare professionals following the successful completion of their Clinical Fellowship Year, contingent upon approval from the Department Manager.

Additionally, this position may facilitate student learning experiences with the endorsement of the Student Supervision Coordinator.

Licensure and Certification Requirements:
Must possess a valid license (or be eligible for licensure) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist, along with the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or be a Clinical Fellowship Year candidate.

Ongoing Employment Requirements:
Maintain a current license from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist and hold a valid CCC in Speech-Language Pathology. For Clinical Fellowship Year candidates, successful completion of the CFY and acquisition of the CCC is required within the first year of employment, along with CPR certification.

Experience Requirements:

Mandatory:
New graduates or Clinical Fellowship Year candidates with less than two years of experience are encouraged to apply. Candidates with prior clinical exposure to the evaluation and treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders are preferred. Experience in conducting swallow studies, including Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) and bedside assessments, is essential.

Desirable:
Experience in managing tracheostomy care related to swallowing and communication disorders, as well as handling complex swallowing and cognitive-communication disorders, is advantageous. Previous work in critical care settings and familiarity with electronic documentation systems are also preferred.

Educational Background:

Mandatory:
A Master's Degree from an ASHA-accredited institution in Speech and Language Pathology is required, along with completion of necessary learning exchange courses.

Desirable:
Clinical rotations during graduate studies in a medical environment are preferred.

Independent Responsibilities:


The Communication Specialist is responsible for managing therapy for patients with mild to moderately complex communication and swallowing disorders. This includes scheduling therapy frequency and intensity, selecting and administering assessment tools, interpreting results, completing documentation, planning and executing treatment strategies, and developing both long- and short-term goals. The role also involves educating patients, families, and staff, participating in patient/family/team conferences, and determining when to conclude therapy.

Supervision and guidance regarding clinical skills, professional conduct, billing, caseload management, documentation, and patient care will be provided by a senior Speech-Language Pathologist or higher, as needed.


Additional Position Requirements:
Work schedules will be established in collaboration with the respective Manager, with potential requirements for weekends and holidays based on departmental needs.
