Position Summary

The Respiratory Therapist will execute therapeutic clinical procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of practice, adhering to physician directives. This role is situated within an adult outpatient rehabilitation environment, as part of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation team, focusing on enhancing cardiovascular fitness and promoting lifestyle changes to improve patients' overall health and well-being. The therapist will engage with patients individually to assess and educate them on their specific respiratory requirements, including medication management and supplemental oxygen use. Additionally, the therapist will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to monitor and support patients during group exercise sessions. The patient demographic includes individuals with pulmonary diseases and those undergoing lung transplantation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide recommendations for home respiratory equipment, including oxygen therapy.
  • Educate patients on the use of respiratory devices.
  • Administer and adjust oxygen levels as necessary.
  • Monitor vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation during exercise.
  • Ensure the proper setup, safety, and functionality of equipment and supplies for patient care.
  • Conduct routine cleaning and maintenance of respiratory equipment.
  • Understand pharmacological implications, dosages, and responses to adverse drug reactions.
  • Administer respiratory medications as required.
  • Perform patient assessments in accordance with established protocols.
  • Provide education to patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Document all relevant information in the patient medical record.
  • Communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team to share critical clinical information.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Recognize life-threatening situations and initiate appropriate interventions.
  • In emergencies, perform CPR and bag-mask ventilation.
  • Handle administrative tasks related to the daily operations of pulmonary rehabilitation and graduate programs.
Qualifications

Education: Completion of a 2-year AMA accredited respiratory care program (Associate's Degree or equivalent) or currently enrolled in an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program, with eligibility for registry.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a relevant field.

Licensure and Certification:
  • North Carolina State Licensure or Provisional License.
  • Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) for graduates.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and any other relevant certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to make informed clinical decisions based on patient age and condition.
  • Validation of skills and competencies relevant to this role.
  • Commitment to maintaining annual skill and safety compliance requirements.
  • Adherence to North Carolina's annual continuing education requirements.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Experience working with patients of diverse ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and moving equipment.
