Position Overview for Adult and Pediatric CareThe Clinical Lead for Respiratory Therapy (RT) is a pivotal role designed to collaborate with RT leadership within a designated unit or department, ensuring that clinical tasks are executed proficiently. The Clinical Lead RT serves as the primary resource for staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers regarding critical RT-specific clinical matters. Responsibilities include supervising, executing, assessing, and coordinating diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of practice, adhering to physician directives for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients in various care settings, including intermediate, intensive, and emergency care. The role also encompasses mentoring and guiding the assigned team of staff.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Support- Execute all responsibilities of the Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner and ECMO Specialist.
- Serve as the RT staff expert for all clinical and operational inquiries.
- Exhibit strong critical thinking capabilities to make informed decisions.
- Effectively prioritize both scheduled and unscheduled events, proactively addressing actual and potential challenges.
- Instruct and oversee patient assessments to ensure optimal clinical decisions.
- Maintain expertise in all RT technologies within the assigned departments.
- Coordinate emergency response efforts.
- Assist in the formulation and updates of clinical care protocols and policies.
- Evaluate and enhance patient care plans.
- Foster high-level interactions with physicians and medical staff.
- Act as a liaison between Clinical Resource Management and Clinical Engineering to guarantee proper equipment operation and service.
- Document and report any equipment malfunctions.
- Ensure a safe and suitable working environment.
- Confirm appropriate staffing and skill levels for each patient care area.
- Establish expected job outcomes, performance metrics, and professional development goals for team members.
- Assess the performance of all staff.
- Provide insights into hiring and termination decisions.
- Monitor and report incidents related to patient care, safety, medication, and employee matters.
- Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and practice guidelines.
- Oversee adherence to ventilator protocols.
- Implement necessary corrective actions promptly.
- Conduct shift planning, including staff assignments and redirection as needed.
- Manage supply inventory effectively.
- Provide feedback on scheduling assignments.
- Coordinate and oversee departmental improvement initiatives.
- Communicate daily operational activities to RT leadership.
- Facilitate orientation, education, and training for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Assess and ensure the competency and safety of respiratory care staff.
- Plan and deliver instructional sessions.
- Effectively communicate changes in policies and procedures.
- Coordinate product and equipment evaluations.
- Provide input on departmental equipment selection and functionality.
- Assist with departmental clinical research initiatives.
- Participate in department-related committees.
- A Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care, Healthcare, Business, or a related field is required.
- Candidates without a Bachelor's degree must complete their degree within three years of appointment.
- A minimum of five years of experience in clinical respiratory therapy, including at least three years in intensive care; supervisory experience is preferred.
- Current RT licensure from the North Carolina State Board of Respiratory Care.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- In-depth knowledge of professional theory, practice, and procedures.
- Ability to assess the respiratory needs of both acute and chronically ill patients and their families.
- Proficient in independently seeking resources and collaborating effectively.
- Capacity to establish and maintain productive working relationships.
- Strong communication skills with patients, families, visitors, healthcare teams, and leadership.
- Competence in educating patients and families according to care plans.
- Ability to utilize sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information and treatment.
- Proficient in fine motor skills.
- Capability to document activities, assessments, care plans, interventions, and evaluations.
- Familiarity with computer systems and ability to learn new software.
- Ability to navigate the healthcare entity to provide clinical care.
- Capacity to endure prolonged standing and walking.
- Ability to remain organized and focused.
- Knowledge of procedures and techniques for administering routine and specialized treatments.
- Physical capability to lift or push over 30 pounds and carry emergency equipment weighing approximately 20 pounds.
- Ability to perform tasks requiring walking, running, climbing, and bending.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
