Stanford, California, United States Education Unlimited Full time
Position Overview

Education Unlimited is dedicated to providing enriching academic summer camps and pre-college programs for students in grades 4-12. Our diverse offerings include camps focused on public speaking, college admissions preparation, science exploration, performing arts, writing, computer skills, leadership development, video production, and educational tours.

Role: Engineering Camp Educator

We are in search of enthusiastic and knowledgeable science educators to join our dynamic, hands-on summer program.

Session Availability: Please specify your availability in your application. Instructors may be selected for one or multiple sessions based on their schedule.

Compensation includes housing, meals, salary, and a travel stipend for the right candidates.

Teaching Opportunities: We are looking to fill two teaching positions for the following session:

  • Intro to Engineering
  • Target Audience: Grades 4 - 6

Course Overview:

The Intro to Engineering course introduces students to fundamental engineering design principles, allowing them to tackle various building challenges that will be tested through performance trials and unexpected hurdles. Students will collaborate with peers and our exceptional instructors to explore concepts of force, energy, mass, and other essential elements of Newtonian physics.

Throughout the week, campers will draw inspiration from real-world structures to create the tallest skyscrapers and most resilient bridges. They will also investigate air resistance and density, learning how different vehicles such as planes, boats, and cars function, while discovering innovative ways to construct and enhance their designs. Students will gain insights into how engineers must consider natural forces, including gravity, air resistance, friction, buoyancy, and centripetal force, in their creations.

As the program progresses, engineering challenges will become increasingly complex. Campers will engage in tasks that merge their physics knowledge with creativity and teamwork, all while adhering to a budget. They will learn to harness air resistance to design windmills and helicopters, as well as counteract it in the construction of rockets and planes. The culmination of the camp will feature a demonstration of the campers' final projects, including an egg drop challenge—where teams will compete to protect their fragile cargo.

Key Responsibilities:

In-Person Camp Duties: Responsibilities include delivering the Education Unlimited curriculum, supervising students in various settings, organizing and leading lab activities, and coordinating a final showcase of student projects at the end of the camp. Instructors will also be tasked with monitoring student progress and submitting required reports to the camp director and home office.

In addition to teaching, instructors are expected to assist the camp director with supervision, recreational activities, and some administrative responsibilities. Candidates should demonstrate maturity, reliability, and the ability to collaborate effectively with fellow staff members. Instructors will also serve as mentors and may assist with field trips and student excursions. With the support of the entire team, instructors are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of students while achieving educational objectives.

For overnight programs, instructors have the option to commute daily or stay on campus. Overnight staff will receive full room and board and will be expected to assist with evening supervision duties.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates typically include year-round science educators, graduate-level science students, or individuals with substantial teaching or mentoring experience in relevant fields.

  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience or significant subject matter expertise.
  • Experience working with middle, high school, or college-aged students in an educational environment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with advanced degrees.
  • A strong passion for science education.
  • Professional demeanor and calm disposition.
  • Self-motivated with strong follow-through.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
