This esteemed 250+ bed facility is nationally acclaimed for its stroke care and offers a wide range of medical services, including obstetrics, comprehensive cardiac care, a dedicated wound care center, and a 24-hour emergency department. Located conveniently near downtown Richmond, our hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission (TJC) and has received national recognition for its clinical excellence, particularly in cardiac surgery and overall cardiac care.

Position Overview:

The Respiratory Care Practitioner I plays a vital role in delivering respiratory therapy through comprehensive patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Responsibilities include performing various respiratory care procedures such as oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator management, bronchial hygiene therapy, and patient education. The practitioner will monitor patient responses to therapies and make necessary adjustments based on assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • May act as a mentor for new staff and students.
  • Conducts thorough assessments of patients' physical conditions through various techniques.
  • Administers treatments as per physician directives, explaining procedures and therapeutic objectives to patients.
  • Evaluates the appropriateness of prescribed therapies and suggests alternative methods to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Sets up and manages different oxygen therapy modalities to ensure optimal oxygenation levels.
  • Delivers aerosol therapy and monitors patients' vital signs and therapeutic responses.
  • Provides postural drainage and percussion to facilitate proper bronchial secretion clearance.
  • Educates patients and families on the use of respiratory devices and therapies.
  • Assists physicians during bronchoscopy and tracheostomy procedures.
  • Collects sputum samples for laboratory analysis and ensures proper airway clearance.
  • Interprets laboratory values and performs arterial punctures for blood gas analysis.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Participates in emergency resuscitation efforts as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited Respiratory Care program (required).
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.

Licensing & Certifications:

  • Current state Respiratory Care License (required).
  • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credential (required).
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential is preferred.
  • BLS certification (required).
  • ACLS and PALS certifications are preferred.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting is preferred.
  • Six months of experience in a general care area is preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in interpreting data and providing patient education.
  • Knowledgeable in non-invasive respiratory therapy equipment.

Training:

  • Familiarity with EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) is preferred.
