Key Responsibilities

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for coordinating and delivering exceptional, patient-focused respiratory care in alignment with departmental needs and established standards of practice. As an integral member of the patient care team, the Respiratory Therapist will:

  • Administer various diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures.
  • Monitor patients receiving both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
  • Provide critical care therapy modalities and perform arterial punctures and blood gas analyses.
  • Respond to emergencies including cardiopulmonary arrests and trauma activations.
  • Maintain and manage respiratory equipment.
  • Deliver specialized services to the department.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Required: High School Diploma
  • Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved Registered Respiratory Therapy Program

Experience:

  • Preferred: One year of experience in critical care.
  • Experience in neonatal and pediatric critical care is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with floor care, non-invasive and mechanical ventilation, blood gas analysis, and pulmonary function testing.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Required: Current Virginia Licensed Respiratory Therapist
  • Maintain NBRC credentials for Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Current NRP and PALS certifications
  • STABLE certification within the first year
  • Preferred: NBRC subspecialty credential in Neonatal/Pediatric Specialty Exam
  • PFT or RPFT (PFT lab only)
  • Active membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care
