Job Title: Sr Automation Engineer

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems is a global leader in the design, engineering, and production of munitions, weapons, and armament systems. We are seeking a highly skilled Sr Automation Engineer to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Sr Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing robotic platforms from prototype through product commercialization. This includes creating an integrated autonomous interface, mobility, communication, and human-robot interaction. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand opportunities for robotic applications and develop solutions to resolve production problems, maximize product reliability, and minimize cost.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop automated systems for use in diverse manufacturing and production environments.
  • Design control systems and programmable logic controllers to automate specific tasks.
  • Write and debug software programs for automated machinery and systems.
  • Develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens and dashboards for monitoring and controlling processes.
  • Program robotics and other automation hardware.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues with automated systems.
  • Oversee the installation of automation systems and machinery.
  • Ensure that automated systems are integrated effectively with existing processes.
  • Provide technical support during the installation and startup phases.
  • Monitor and maintain automated systems to ensure they function properly over time.
  • Implement upgrades and improvements to enhance performance and efficiency.
  • Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance.
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, user manuals, and maintenance procedures.
  • Train operators and other staff on the proper use and maintenance of automated systems.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software developers, and production managers.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to understand their needs and provide tailored automation solutions.
  • Ensure all automated systems comply with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Implement safety protocols and procedures to protect workers and equipment.
Requirements:
  • Associates Degree in General Engineering or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in automation engineering or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Programmable Logic Control (PLC) programming, Human Machine Interface (HMI) development, robotics, CAD software, and simulation tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Travel Requirements:

Likely less than 25%.
