Orthopaedic Trauma - Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner

Role Overview
The Orthopaedics Advanced Practice Provider operates under the guidance of the Orthopaedic Manager and collaborates closely with Orthopaedic surgeons.

Key Responsibilities:

This role encompasses essential hospital documentation, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating treatment strategies for orthopaedic consultations, executing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, assisting in surgical operations, prescribing medications and orthotics, and providing on-call support.

The Orthopaedic APP serves as a patient advocate, facilitating access to services and supporting the continuum of care.

It is expected that the Orthopaedic APP practices within the full scope allowed by current state and federal regulations.


  • Evaluate orthopaedic patients and devise treatment plans under the supervision of an Orthopaedic surgeon. Ensure all hospital documentation is completed accurately.
  • Prepare orthopaedic patients for surgery by ensuring timely completion of all necessary consultations, laboratory tests, and diagnostic studies.
  • Assist orthopaedic surgeons during surgical procedures.

Additional Duties:
First-assisting, proficient wound closure, and application of post-operative dressings/splints. Ensure all perioperative documentation and orders are completed.

  • Conduct therapeutic and diagnostic procedures with validated privileges and competencies.
  • Prescribe controlled substances within categories II-V with an active DEA license.
  • Provide on-call coverage at a Level II Trauma facility, evaluating and managing emergent orthopaedic cases.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, maintaining effective communication with staff, patients, and families.
  • Uphold professional licenses and certifications, fulfilling all continuing medical education (CME) requirements.
  • Engage in research opportunities and evidence-based practice analysis. Participate in performance improvement initiatives, demonstrating financial responsibility through efficient resource use.
  • Attend ongoing Advanced Practice Provider meetings and educational events.
  • Serve as a mentor to Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner students, fostering an engaging and respectful learning environment.
  • Possess a foundational knowledge of medicine with comfort in prescribing medications and narcotics.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Identify common orthopaedic injuries and their treatments.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in splint and cast application.
  • Excel in wound closure and management.
  • Show competence in joint aspiration and arthrocentesis.
  • Execute bedside procedures, including but not limited to: wound closure, incision and drainage, nerve blocks, and injections.
  • Display competence or willingness to learn major joint reduction techniques.
  • Exhibit competence or willingness to learn skeletal traction application.
  • Maintain proficiency in sterile techniques.
Qualifications:

Education:
Master's Degree, graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner program. CRNP with RNFA.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of experience in Orthopaedics is preferred, with a focus on orthopaedic trauma being advantageous.
